I recently re-read the sermon ABL gave in 1976 at the ordination ceremony, when he ordained several priests without the blessing of Rome. That was a big step at the time, when he would be accused of "schism" by critics. There was no immediate official reaction from Rome, but ABL said in his sermon that it was customary for Rome to send a blessing for priestly ordinations. Apparently there had been no such blessing for that day in 1976. A mere 12 years later JPII issued Ecclesia Dei the day after he consecrated 4 new bishops, which contained so-called excommunications of all 6 bishops including +Castro Mayer, who had been present.
.
In the sermon, ABL said that the Traditional Latin Mass was "canonized" by Pope St. Pius V. That was interesting to see, because it was in 1999 in Hamilton, Canada, at a Fr. Gruner Conference when I met a "trad" priest from England who told me he had a real problem with using the word "canonized" applied to the TLM. Fr. Paul Trinchard repeatedly used the terminology, "the Canonized Latin Mass" instead of "Traditional Latin Mass."
.
Furthermore, ABL assures the listeners in 1976 that a future pope cannot take away the canonized status granted by a previous pope. The Mass St. Pius V canonized therefore cannot be "un-canonized" by any pope later on.
.
While he didn't say so, this must apply to saints who have been canonized. In around 1962, St. Philomena was removed from the calendar (August 11th in the USA) and the word on the street at the time was that the Church had "un-canonized" her. Apparently that was just a malicious rumor, as there is no history of any official decree from the Church "un-canonizing" any saint. But checking back, I couldn't find any report of St. Philomena ever having been canonized in the first place, rather it said she was "raised to the altars" by the Pope, Gregory XVI, in fulfillment of his promise to Ven. Pauline Jaricot when she had returned from Mugnano after being cured of her serious and debilitating illness.
.
It makes me wonder what ABL would have said today after JPII was canonized. I suspect he would quote Matt. 24:24, "...insomuch as to deceive (if possible) even the elect."
.
It seems to me the only way out would be for a future pope to annul the entire papacy of JPII, Benedict XVI and Francis, at least........
.
I watched the ceremony of JPII's so-called canonization, which was a real chore. It was a deliberate montage or patchwork of Gregorian Chant and modern Novus Ordo pop songs, of traditional Latin and modern colloquial Italian and even some English. (They also included various other languages at some parts, making the whole duration much longer.) A trad priest friend asked me if I thought it was done properly, and when I told him as far as I could tell, all the key elements were there, he hung his head in shame. He had heard the same from others. He had been unable to watch himself because it was too upsetting to him. This was in the context of hearing a mutual friend and traditional priest having proclaimed on several occasions that "canonizations are infallible."
