When is a church not truly Catholic?

All valid parishes for the Diocese of Orlando are listed on the diocesan Web site — www.orlandodiocese.org. Included in this list of recognized Catholic churches are those in communion with the Holy See that fall under the jurisdiction of Eastern Rite bishops in the United States, such as the Maronite, Ukrainian and Byzantine Churches.

There are churches in Central Florida who use the term “catholic” even though they have not been decreed by the local bishop, are not in communion with the Holy See and do not recognize papal authority. Therefore, attendance at a service on Sunday at one of these churches will not fulfill your Sunday obligation for participation in the Mass. That’s why it is important to check the Diocese of Orlando website or call the Diocesan office at 407-246-4800 to determine if a church is a part of the Diocese of Orlando, the Central Florida region under the leadership of Bishop John Noonan, whose apostolic succession derives from the Twelve Apostles, from the first century to the present day.

Non-Roman Catholic churches in Central Florida are listed below, in alphabetical order by city:

    Belleview
St. Paul Polish National Catholic Church

    Clermont
    Oratory of St. Lucy

    Cocoa
    St. Patrick Catholic Anglican Church

    Eustis
St. Filumena Roman Catholic Church (Traditional Latin Mass)

    Lakeland
St. Thomas More Old Catholic Mission

    Melbourne
    Holy Family Traditional Catholic Church
Liberal Catholic Church of St. Pierre

    Ocala
The Catholic House Church of Mary and Joseph

    Orlando
    Church of St. Raphael Archangel
    Holy Angels Catholic Community
Holy Name of Jesus Parish (483/485 Wurst Road Ocoee)
    Iglesia Rey de Reyes
    Sacred Heart Traditional Catholic
St. Thomas More Chapel (Society of St. Pius X)

    St. Cloud
Santas Perpetua y Felicidad Iglesia Católica/Santuario Divino Niño de Jesus

    Tavares
All Saints Roman Catholic Chapel (Traditional)

    Winter Park
    St. Dorothy Catholic Community
    King of Kings Catholic Cathedral

Note: The churches above are known to exist in the Orlando Diocese. Others may exist but were not uncovered during research. When in doubt, visit the diocesan Web site, www.orlandodiocese.org, for a full listing of official Roman Catholic parishes in the Orlando Diocese.

  • Instead of going to the schismatics, go to St Anne's instead. Leave a large of envelope of cash, the diocese needs it to pay legal bills:

    HOLLY HILL --

A retired Catholic priest was one of six men arrested in Holly Hill as part of a sex sting in a public bathroom.

According to our news partners at the Daytona Beach News-Journal, Paige Blakely was arrested last Thursday after an undercover officer said the 61-year-old exposed himself inside the bathroom.

Blakely is a former pastor at St. Ann's Catholic Church, in DeBary. He retired in 2007.

According to an arrest report obtained by the News-Journal, Blakely told police he was in the bathroom to "experience what it was like," and that he was trying to get a "thrill."

Blakely has been charged with misdemeanor indecent exposure.

The Diocese of Orlando told the News-Journal that following Blakely's arrest, Bishop John Noonan removed the retired priest's faculties pending the outcome of a police investigation.

A retired priest and he was only 61 ? If you say so.

So, in other words, these churches probably have valid priests and valid masses.

Been to Sacred Heart in Orlando twice. Awesome place and clergy.
I believe some of the parishes mentioned may belong to Liberal Catholic or Theosophical groups.

Yep, they grouped Traditional Catholics in with protestants and they did it as a slap in the face.

while the Orlando diocese is so thoroughly low-church prot they no longer bother having the slightest veneer of Catholicism that other newdioceses maintain.

Also, check the site for the O. L. of Lourdes in Daytona Beach. Went to one of their "services" years ago while on vacation. "Pantheistic" comes to mind.

The minor "Basilica" in Daytona wasn't so bad as far as NO services go.

  • If the name of the parish has "Catholic Community" in it, the chances of it having nothing resembling Catholicism are really high.

What would Sacred Heart be? CMRI? Independent?

  • Wow, a list of definite "where to go to valid Catholic Mass" listings from your local Novus Ordo bishop's office  (mixed in with a sketchy lot of protestant groups).  I'll turn this curse into a blessing and will definitely check out the traditional Catholic chapels they listed.  Now I know where to go to Mass the next time I'm in the Orlando, FL area.

Silly person!  Some of the alleged "masses", as celebrated by alleged "priests", might make you squirm in the pews!

Wow, a list of definite "where to go to valid Catholic Mass" listings from your local Novus Ordo bishop's office (mixed in with a sketchy lot of protestant groups).

It's surprisingly kind of the Novus Ordo diocese to identify the "traditional" ones.

I've spent arguably waaay too many hours over the last few days applying local knowledge to nailing down details and correcting the diocese's inexcusably mistaken geography, so that visiting traditional Catholics would be less likely to make mistakes that they'd regret after settling into the pews.

Quote from: Emitte Lucem Tuam (Jun 2, 2014, 7:30 pm, concluded)
I'll [...] definitely check out the traditional Catholic chapels they listed.  Now I know where to go to Mass the next time I'm in the Orlando, FL area.

That "area" is referred to locally as "Central Florida".  Of those "schismatic churches" listed by the diocese, only a minority (33%: 6 of 18, hastily counted?) either claim--or plausibly would offer--a Latin Mass of any vintage.

So despite errors I noticed on the page for 2 sites (only 1 being within the subject-diocese boundary), Retro Catholics' <www.latinmasstimes.com/Florida>: "Latin Mass in Florida" page, might be a productive starting-point.

Quote from: JezusDeKoning (Jun 2, 2014, 7:27 pm)

That's a preconceived notion of mine that my on-line research on the subject-diocesan list is largely confirming.  But it seems to me that I noticed a few months ago that Web sites for some Novus Ordo churches are replacing "Parish" with "Community" (readers can draw any deductions from that that they think fits).

I hope I'll be able to post my results within a day or so, possibly separated into 2 follow-ups: 1 for the plausibly traditional ones, and 1 for all the rest (for the sake of completeness).
