Just want to state something I learned re: eligibility to the priesthood of born out of wedlock for anyone who might’ve read my previous comment on this thread. In a video on MHT seminary’s Yt page Bp. Sanborn says that men born out of wedlock discerning the priesthood in the current crisis in the Church are not ineligible to apply to their seminary.

I assumed incorrectly… And we all know what assuming does… (I haven’t until just this week looked into this more in depth. When I first learned of this typical ineligibility I stopped looking at MHT seminary stuff because it was bittersweet and resigned myself to not to torture myself. Although I still have been watching the lectures of their courses.)

He mentions several other things for any young man discerning the vocation to consider before applying. But none of their bare minimum standards for a potential priest are hard and fast requirements. Just want to make sure people see this.

I should’ve done a little more digging before I made my comment. I hope this helps someone else out there! God bless you discerning young men. The Church needs good priests!

Here’s the video where he talks about admissions: https://youtu.be/-ktViSMjvkc?si=D2eWdaTxUFO_beQo

In regular times, this impediment could be dispensed by the diocesan bishop decision, as far as know.

I have not read about any particular case, but I imagine that the bishops did not dismiss promising young man just because they were born out of wedlock.

I'm pretty sure that the dispensation became pretty much a formality and automatically granted right before Vatican II, for the same reasons indicated by Bishop Sanborn why they also typically grant it.
