  • Dear forum,

What is the belief of Sedevacantist Catholics of confirmations performed in the Novus Ordo Church? Are they valid?

What about a confirmation using the pre Vatican 2 tradition rite by a Novus Ordo bishop? This is how I was confirmed and I want to believe it was a licit and valid ceremony, but I have these nagging questions in the back of my mind. This is due to the fact that I wasn't feeling any graces or any special spiritual feelings or insights during the confirmation and mass. I felt emotionaly shut down that morning like I was just going through the motions. It didn't help that the bishop didn't know the rubics and had to be helped by two traditional priests throughout the ceremony.

I hope this doesn't sound silly, this has been bothering me the last four years, the confirmation occurred in 2007. btw I'm not a sedevacantist, I'm on the fence about the issue, but I completely understand why some people are.

    God bless
    James

  • I was confirmed by a NO priest.  I have always wanted to be confirmed conditionally in the traditional rite.  Anyone know of a bishop willing to perform this sacrament for me?

P.S.  Not trying to hijack the thread, but this might be of interest to others.

    Dear James,

Regarding sacraments the Church teaches we must follow the safest option and that we cannot have doubts about it, and that if we have reasonable doubts we should receive it again conditionally.

I don´t think any sedevacantist (I am one of them) could be morally certain that the new sacrament of order is valid, because eventhough it is possible for a Pope to change the matter and form of Holy Orders, yet we don´t believe Paul VI was Pope, therefore, those changes must be regarded at least as doubtful.

You don´t have to feel anything. This is not about feelings. As a priest used to say the thing is not if God console or not (He certainly does), but rather if He exists or not, so in this case I tell you the thing is not if you feel something or not but rather if you can be morally certain your confirmation was valid.

Where do you live? Why you can´t find any Bishop?

No traditional priests are in the city where I live; the nearest SSPX is 60 miles away, and it is impossible for us to attend.  Years ago we did attend, but now we are broke, and our aging car cannot, safely, make the trip.

  • I doubt that an SSPX bishop would confirm you again anyway unless there was some specific reason to think that the sacrament was invalid in your case.  Since it was performed in the traditional rite, and the SSPX seems to recognize NO ordinations as valid,  I doubt that they would think you have a sacramental problem.

  • That's not what they say (or said) on their website.  Sorry that I do not have the link handy.
