Confession before Baptism?

  • Someone I know recently went through RCIA in the local NO parish.  She was raised in a protestant household, but rarely attended protestant services.  She was never baptized.

Apparently, during the RCIA process, during Lent, each of those in the program make a first Confession.  This makes sense to me for those who had been baptized by protestants, and will merely be confirmed into the NO church (putting aside the issues of validity of protestant baptisms for the moment).  However, it doesn't really make sense to me for those that haven't been baptized yet.  Can someone who is not baptized even have their sins absolved in Confession?  What would the purpose of the Confession be if all sins are cleansed in baptism anyway?

  • Must be another Novus Ordo abomination. No other sacrament can be had until the person is baptized so you're right, someone who is not baptized cannot have their sins absolved in Confession.

  • What Stubborn said 100%.  It's a sacrilege to attempt Confession without prior Baptism ... since there's no valid matter and no proper subject of the Sacrament.  One need only read the Council of Trent on the Sacrament of Confession.

  • Quote from: Canon 842.1
A person who has not received baptism cannot be admitted validly to other sacraments.

It has been infallibly declared that Baptism is the first among the other sacraments. It would constitute a grave sacriledge with absolutely no validity whatsoever to even attempt to receive confession, Eucharist, or any other sacrament before receiving water Baptism, which is the entrance to the Church, to the spiritual life in Christ, and which alone makes us children of God.
If anyone says that true and natural water is not necessary for baptism and thus twists into some metaphor the words of our Lord Jesus Christ" Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit" (Jn 3:5) let him be anathema.

A story was told of an incident during World War II. It was right before an important battle when the priest came out to give general absolution to all the Catholic soldiers. He called on the Catholic soldiers to kneel doen while he gave the absolution. Among those kneeling down was s person known to be Jєωιѕн. Later on after the battle was over, he asked the Jєωιѕн soldier why he had knelt down when he was giving absolution. "I too am sorry for my sins."  said the Jєωιѕн soldier.

  • The Coptic Orthodox church requires all those to be baptized to make a general confession of all their sins to the priest before baptism.

If they actually attempt to confer absolution and think that's OK, then they're heretics on that point (in addition to many other points).

How cute.  Too bad for him that there's no forgiveness of sins without Baptism -- that's defined dogma, poche.

    Poche, Poche, Poche, Poche, Poche.

    NO.

That is not how things work, Poche. Not at all. Have you been attending a Lutheran church for the past year or something, man? Come on.

One MUST have baptism before confession for an absolution of sins before being admitted to the Eucharist. In what world would they be reversed? Answer: in NO world because that is a sacrilege to the Almighty.

With all sincerity, poche, either learn the fundamental tenets of our Faith or go somewhere else. I'm sure Karl Keating would welcome you with open arms to a forum more within your Novus Ordite purview.

I thought that is what I said when I said that there is no need to go to confession before baptism.

  • Explain this then:

    Quote

The Jєωιѕн soldier was not baptized (unless he was a part of one of those malarkey Jєωs for Jesus sects or something) and therefore could not receive absolution because he is not part of the Church.

You know (and this is in no way personal), you make no sense, sometimes.

Find a new priest, one who doesn't implicitly promote religious indifferentism.  But then I doubt that you'll find such a one in the circles you run in.

  • When I converted, through the SSPX, I was told by the priest who baptized me, that I didn't have to make a confession (general), though it would be a good idea. I decided not to, since it's not required. I had not ever been previously baptized as a Protestant.
"It is licit to resist a Sovereign Pontiff who is trying to destroy the Church. I say it is licit to resist him in not following his orders and in preventing the execution of his will. It is not licit to Judge him, to punish him, or to depose him, for these are acts proper to a superior."
