  • It is a rule of life that I appreciate very much, and I think it is a gift for the church, but since it is not a dogma, the door is always open,” Francis said on Monday.

If this discipline of the Church is lifted, I wonder how the SSPX will respond.

  • I would hope they respond by maintaining the priestly celibacy in their society.

Removing priestly celibacy would be a despicable thing because it opens a whole can of worms to a plethora of potentially sinful situations with regards to the marital act and the sanctity of marriage. The chances of a priest sacrilegiously offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in mortal sin would be much higher.

    I don't follow.

How does being married (as opposed to single) make one any more likely to be in mortal sin?

(NOTE: I'm vehemently against married priests -- read my other posts on this topic. I'm just asking this one question)

I mean, seriously! I'm not concerned about my Masses being sacrilegious, because I'm not a priest and I don't say Mass. But I'm certainly concerned about saving my soul and avoiding Mortal Sin!  So please enlighten me how I lessened my chances of salvation by the decision I made on my wedding day to get married.

Well, I've long suspected that the primary reason SOME Roman Rite folks oppose married priests has to do with juxtaposing the thought of a priest offering the Mass with the priest having relations with his wife ... rather than the solid reasons you've articulated, Matthew.  I'm guessing these people have some visions of priests having a choir of angels wipe them after they use the bathroom also.

  • Ah, you're right. All we can do is hope and pray that priestly celibacy remains mandatory in the Roman Rite. There's all the reasons to support it.

St. Paul tells us in Scripture that the celibate state is higher than the married.  Our Lord also says the celibate state is a calling.  If not called, then God's Will is marriage.  Apparently, Pope Francis isn't very familiar with Holy Scripture or with Tradition.
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

  • So this means allowing married priests to have realations, correct?

Headline sounds like it will allow fornication. But who knows what this pope really means.

  • Francis should just go for it all right now and allow women priestesses to be involved in same-sex domestic partnerships while practicing and professing Buddhism.  Why mess around?

  • The mass should be offered by the chaste hands of a Virgin male priest who has no temptations against chastity and who does not pursue women whence he sees one.

The more sacrifice to God the better.
He is an alter Christus, and Christ was a virgin and unspotted lamb. The closest thing to an unspotted lamb in human terms is a chaste virgin male religious who is a priest offering the mass.

We should value this purity of priests, lest we become worldly and think we have a right to indulge instead of make the sacrifice as said in the scriptures.

They can't even have "temptations"?  That would seriously limit the number of Masses that could ever be offered.  As for "virgin", many of the Apostles had been married, and many Eastern Rite priests have always been married.

No temptations when offering the mass. If they are used to getting their freak on they will not be able to turn off the music whence a foxy lady is on the dancefloor.

That's very naive and borderline silly.

  • At the end of the day, however, regardless of your feelings about the subject, a Pope can do whatever he sees fit when it comes to matters that are not of divine law.  And clearly it's not contrary to divine law to have married priests, since it's always been allowed in the Eastern Rites.
