I remember hearing, somewhere, some time back, that the Communist-approved church did not go along with the changes following Vat 2,  and being  under govt watch dogs they did not "adapt".

Not that Cardinal Zen was or is any part of that organisation, but it possible that God protected Catholics in China to an extent that we do not comprehend.

God writes straight with crooked lines?
Cardinal Zen was the first cleric to offer a NO Mass in China, some time in the 80s I believe. Although, despite that, he's said to be a strong supporter of the Tridentine rite.

Yes. When the N.O. came out, the underground Church in China followed Rome. The Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association, however, refused to implement it unless they did the translation. That took time, so the CPCA churches had the Latin mass until at least the late 1970s, and it is still in some churches, mostly in Beijing.

When they did implement the N.O. they avoided one of the more distracting N.O. elements - the "handshake of peace". In China, they bow to each other.

Yes, he did offer the new Mass but do not know for how long.   He was a great admirer of Benedict XVI.

This is very interesting: are their bishops valid bishops? We’re they consecrated in the old rite by old rite bishops?
It is my hope that there is an ultra conservative underground church in China which A didn’t go along with communism and their “Catholic” church and B didn’t go along with V2.
I think however that God won’t hold the Chinese underground Catholics for being novus ordo because they have no other option and more importantly (much more importantly) probably no trad influence.
