Cardinal Pell says he recently learned that former Ballarat Bishop Ronald Mulkearns had destroyed docuмents to hide cases of abuse and he admitted that in some cases members of the clergy were placed above the law.

But he denies paying lip service to victims of Church abuse and only saying sorry because he was caught out.

"I have already stated quite explicitly, acknowledged the errors that have been made by Bishop Mulkearns and [former Melbourne archbishop Frank Little]," he said.

At the end of the questioning, Pell was shown docuмents which showed direct evidence of cover ups, at which point he admitted the inexcusable conduct of, in particular, the late Archsbishop Little.

Pell's demeanour is variously described as lacking empathy and bordering on the psychopathic, but the line of questioning is very loaded and provocative. The most interesting part for me was the exposure of his predecessor Frank Little (died in the late 2000's), who it was rumoured was a mason and had deliberately helped to protect priest who had abused children.
