Cardinal Burke suggests going further. http://rorate-caeli.blogspot.com/2016/11/cardinal-burke-if-pope-persists-in.html

There is, in the Tradition of the Church, the practice of correction of the Roman Pontiff. It is something that is clearly quite rare. But if there is no response to these questions, then I would say that it would be a question of taking a formal act of correction of a serious error ...

If the Pope were to teach grave error or heresy, which lawful authority can declare this and what would be the consequences?

It is the duty in such cases, and historically it has happened, of cardinals and bishops to make clear that the Pope is teaching error and to ask him to correct it.

Too bad they let slide the myriad "errors" made by Francis' predecessors.

I fully expect the Church to prosecute those "errors" in the future:

The question still to be determined... is the canonical validity of their offices?

This is the first time I've heard of this Canonical mechanism?

How wonderful and it makes perfect sense!

For the sake of Church history, this should be done.  It should be on the record that some Cardinals and Bishops formally opposed the "Destroyer" pope.

Too little.  Too late.  99% of the destruction has already been done.  This latest is the tip of the iceberg and these "Cardinals and Bishops" have been asleep at the switch, if not accomplices in the destruction, the entire time.
