"I receive Thee, redeeming Prince of my soul. Out of love for Thee have I studied, watched through many nights, and exerted myself: Thee did I preach and teach. I have never said aught against Thee. Nor do I persist stubbornly in my views. If I have ever expressed myself erroneously on this Sacrament, I submit to the judgement of the Holy Roman Church, in obedience of which I now part from this world." Saint Thomas Aquinas the greatest Doctor of the Church

The reason Canon 10 was established is due to the fact that layman Photius usurped the office of Patriarch of Constantinople from the rightful Patriarch Ignatius.

how long is this obviously proven lie going to be promoted by clerics

you can not claim to be legitimate if you resign....he could have refused to do so

    Quote
Ignatius was arrested and exiled to the island of Terebinthos in 858, where he submitted his resignation.

    Quote
Pope Nicholas felt that the appointment needed the consent of Rome and objected to the fact that Photius was a layperson even though there was precedence for this in both the Western and Eastern churches. He also demanded that the Byzantines give back to Rome the territories of Calabria and Sicily

    Quote
In 861, with approval of Photius, Emperor Michael convened a general council in the Church of the Holy Apostles, known as the First-Second Synod. The pope was invited, and he was glad to send his delegates. He sent them with the instruction to investigate the election of Photius in relation to the canons and and to demand that Illyricuм and southern Italy be given to Rome. This synod ratified the actions of the Seventh Ecuмenical Council condemning iconoclasm. Also, Photius was affirmed as the lawful and canonical patriarch.

    Quote
When the delegates returned to Rome and that Nicholas found that his demands for territorial rights were not considered, he became angry and excommunicated his delegates. He convened a council in Rome in 863 in which he deposed and excommunicated Photius on the basis that his appointment was uncanonical. He chose to recognize Ignatius as the legitimate patriarch.

    Quote
The legates of Pope John VIII attended, prepared to acknowledge Photius as legitimate patriarch, a concession for which the pope was much censured by Latin opinion

a schism? or a Popes personal grievance over the emperor Michael III removing sections of territory from his jurisdiction, more so since John VIII confirmed Photius.

how does the Pope Excommunicate his own delegates when they carry out his orders of investigating the election of Photius in the first place.....did he tell them hey wink wink "investigate" then condemn?

this like the sack of Constantinople is one of those black marks on the men who have represented the church. (note i am not impugning the Church itself)

  • Constantinople IV also ranked Constantinople before the other three Eastern patriarchates of Alexandria, Antioch and Jerusalem. this is in opposition to previous councils which put Constantinople last and only in an honorary sense.
