Title: Caganer
Post by: Dolores on June 16, 2014, 11:18:33 AM
Has anyone else every heard of the Caganer?  Do you believe it is appropriate for a Nativity Scene?

For those who don't know, the Caganer is a figurine that is included in Nativity Scenes in Catalonia.  In addition the the traditional figurines (e.g. the Holy Family, angels, the Magi, shepherds, animals, etc.), they also include the Caganer, which is a depiction of a person defecating.

To me this seems wildly inappropriate for many reasons, but apparently this has been part of Catalan culture since at least the 18th Century, and perhaps even earlier.  To my knowledge, the Church has never objected to it.

What do you think?
