Bishop Sigaud's Letter to Cardinal Tardini

Written on August 22, 1959

In preparation for the Second Vatican Council (referred to as the Ecuмenical Council in the letter), Cardinal Tardini sent out a letter requesting suggestions from all the world’s bishops. Some of these replies are remarkable for their clear-sightedness. Here follows the response sent by Bishop Gerald de Proenca Sigaud, Bishop of Jacarezinho in Brazil, written on August 22, 1959 to Cardinal Tardini. This letter was formerly printed in The Angelus magazine.

No doubt this was promptly deposited in the "circular file" by the very same Masons and Communists and Jews about which the good bishop was sounding the alarm.

I understand that Vatican II was not desired by those clergy that were on God's side. Those clergy saw enough that if a council came to be, they knew it would be bad, and we see that. Now, how I came to understand this, I don't recall, maybe someone else can recall this.

I remember many talks by the Nuns at my Parochial School I attended.
We all agreed that the Third Message of our Lady of Fatima was going
to read at the Council. And, acted upon.
The revolution and the changes never entered into the conversation,
such as Holy Mass in English, Priest facing the people. And the
betrayal of Catholic teachings of 1,960 years.
If we could look a few years into the future. And saw what really
transpired. We would rather died a martyrs death than join in all
this coming destruction.
Now, this parochial school is now one the most liberal and progressive
in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
