Although I do not recognize Benedict's claim to the Papacy, I find it amazing that a new idea is forming which holds that Benedict is still Pope, even when he has publicly declared that he has resigned.

This is the text of his resignation in Latin:

Fratres carissimi: Non solum propter tres canonizationes ad hoc Consistorium vos convocavi, sed etiam ut vobis decisionem magni momenti pro Ecclesiae vita communicem. Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. Yes, I agree. I do recognize Benedict XVI's claim to the papacy, but I do not understand how Father Kramer could consider him to still be Pope, after he publicly abdicated the Throne of Peter.

Several weeks ago the term sedebenediciplenism was introduced on this and several other fora. I believe it was a tongue-in-cheek response to conservative Catholics who held a belief that Francis had crossed the line into heresy and therefore in their view, although he resigned, Benedict XVI was still pope.

"sedebenediciplenism /sˌɛdɪbənɪdˈɪsɪplˌiːnɪzəm/ = the position where Benedict XVI is considered a true pope and Francis I is considered an anti-pope. Benedict XVI—initially not a true pope because of his leadership of the non-Catholic, schismatic Conciliar Church sect, although validly elected pope for the Catholic Church—became a true pope of the Catholic Church when he resigned his leadership role of the Conciliar Church on February 28, 2013. According to sedebenediciplenists, Benedict XVI did public penance for his ecuмenical sins by promulgating Summorum Pontificuм, un-"excommunicating" the SSPX bishops, disciplining LCWR and related groups, and supporting the SSPX; thus, he is no longer a heretic and can be and is a valid pope of the Catholic Church."

As best I understand the Authority given the Church and the Pope by Our Lord, the only one who can declare an anti-pope is a subsequent Pope. I'm open to correction on this. When is the last time an anti-pope has been formally declared?

Frances,

You are correct, only a future Pope has the power to declare another a public heretic, and in this case an antipope.

When a man claiming to be Pope is a public heretic, we are not declaring him with any authority to be an antipope. We are witnessing a fact prior to the judgment of the Church. We have no power to compell any who disagree with us on this to believe us. Only a Pope can bind you to his judgment.

Until a Pope judges the antipopes, the only thing we can do is evaluate the evidence and make a determination.

In the interim, however, we can have moral certainty as their acts are public, and they are certainly not hiding their heresy. Secondly, if these men were popes, then it can be argued that the Church would not be holy, apostolic, and indefectible as these men have "bound the Church" to heresy and evil, which could never have come from a true Pope.
