The Roman Catechism:

I can't really agree with every detail here ... since I don't believe that the Just were "tortured" by a kind of loss (aka "delay"), as if they were in Purgatory. St. Joseph committed no actual sin during his life, and was also (by some speculation) freed from Original Sin at some point after his conception. In either case, not having committed actual sin, he would not have been "tortured". Our Lord referred to where the Fathers were as Paradise. In his parable, Our Lord said that Lazarus, in the bosom of Abraham, was in a state of being "comforted". St. John the Baptist undoubtedly also never committed actual sin, and at the very least died a martyr.
I'm also not in agreement about the location of Purgatory, that we can know where that's at.
