  • I learned about it in 3rd or 4th grade religion class in NO Catholic school from an OSB priest.  It would have been around 1980-82.  He was newly ordained, but I don't know how long he had been in the monastery.  I would say he was 50ish.  He frequently spoke of souls falling into hell like snowflakes.

Of course!  Every school child in Catholic School knew about Our Lady of Fatima.  I even went to a parish named after her.  Initially I was surprised by your question Geremia, but then I realized I spent about 10-15 years in the "old church" prior to the implementation of Vatican II at the local level.

Is your sense that kids today are not being taught about Our Lady of Fatima?  What gives you that sense...I always took that for granted..  what is the context or background of your question...why would you ask something that seems so obvious?

    Curious :)

Hmm...that monk must of been in a minority in the early 80s.  My experience of Benedictines is that they were very much more liberal within a Benedictine Rule framework...interesting eh..

You just made me stop and think--he's the only one I remember saying very much about hell until I was in a CPM ran parish 20 years later.

  • Yes, in the '80s I went to a large NO church with a large selection of books from TAN, I pick up books about it.

  • I went to "catholic school" for 13 years and I never once heard of Fatima before I learned about traditional Catholicism.  9 years at a 'catholic' grade school, which was more conservative culturally then any other catholic grade schools in  my area and 4 years at a Jesuit High School.  In grade school we had "mass" during school twice a week ,3 times if a Holy Day was during that week.  I had religion every semester in HS too...No one had ever talked about Fatima in all that "Catholic schooling"...it is almost funny now that I think about it...

    Ditto.

Yes Sir, or ma'am.  I heard that "Pope" JP2 consecrated it to Russia in 1984.  I wasn't tradition in 2000 when I heard the strange things from Ratzinger about it.
"I receive Thee, redeeming Prince of my soul. Out of love for Thee have I studied, watched through many nights, and exerted myself: Thee did I preach and teach. I have never said aught against Thee. Nor do I persist stubbornly in my views. If I have ever expressed myself erroneously on this Sacrament, I submit to the judgement of the Holy Roman Church, in obedience of which I now part from this world." • I remember about the snowflakes falling into hell way back as well.  I think I must understood the "to save them" part thinking she implied that it was still possible to save souls in Hell.

  •  :dancing-banana:No, I never heard of Fatima while growing up with Vat. 2.
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

  • To the original poster...wow... what  a question.  i had no idea that so many Catholics did not know about Fatima!  I mean this happened only in 1917.  I was really impressed and shocked with the poster saying he or she went to Catholic School and then Jesuit school  and did not hear about Fatima.

Fatima, the story, the kids and Sr. Lucia formed very much an integral part of my Catholic upbringing, and given that I was about 10 years old when the Vatican changes filtered down to the local level...so maybe the Traditional Catholics have a point here and that there is or was  a deterioration of what was normal in 1960s.

Now, allbeit, miracles and stories like Fatima are not core to our faith, there is very important messaging that Our Lady gave us (certainly not politically correct inthis daya and age), and I acknowledge and understand the motivation for minimizing the Fatima story...

Wow, is all I can say and thank you for this posting.

Lover of Truth, I am not familiar with the context of snowflakes in hell, but the fact that can be redeemed after going to hell - isn't that against Catholic doctrine?  My understanding is that once your there, make yourself comfortable, cause your not going anywhere..

Yeah, never heard of that specific part to the Fatima story.

I was thinking the Blessed Mother described or showed the children a view of souls "falling like snowflakes" into hell, and it was related with that language by one of the children.
