It was, and remains, a misleading narrative shaped by the American war-making establishment regarding President Diệm and his government. Both he and his brother were unequivocal: “No American boots on Vietnamese soil; doing so would strip us of our legitimacy, to resist communism.” This stance was unwelcome in Washington. Consequently, the United States permitted their removal and assassination.
In pulling that fatal coup in Sth Vietnam in 63, the CIA has put and end to Sth VN's golden decade of reconstruction under Diem. The US wanted a direct intervention in VN while Diem wanted to keep VN from a fully blown-out international war. Bless the Ngo Brothers' souls for they did God's work but were so misunderstood.
