After pressing invitations, on the 7th of May, 1981, Fr. Guérard accepted episcopal consecration from Mgr. Ngo Dinh Thuc, Archbishop of Hué (Vietnam), “a valid, licit and legal consecration”, of which we have given all of our explanations in our magazine, Sodalitium no 13, pp. 25-28, and no16, pp. 33 and 34.

p.18:
When someone has been left alone, it is easy to lie about him so as to hurl the disdain of others against him. An example among them all could once again be Mgr. Lefebvre, during the “Simposio de Montreux”, on the 16th of March, 1983, published by Marchons droit, in June-September of 1983: “Fr. Guérard des Lauriers and Fr. Barbara have written to me with nonsense and insults; I have never responded to them. I have never insulted any of my colleges that have separated themselves from me…”

Two considerations: are the arguments of Mgr. Guérard “nonsense”? Is it an insult to call “treason” the requests for compromise with the modernists, and “traitor” its author? With regard to the response, it was imposed on Mgr. Lefebvre, given his equivocal attitude towards the Faith: if he had not given it, the suspicion surrounding the Faith would remain.

“I have never insulted…” Mgr. Guérard responded: “But Mgr. Lefebvre has calumniated, which is much worse”; and here is the calumny: “Fr. Guérard des Lauriers went to Palmar de Troya to see if this Pope could consider himself authentic. This is schism. It is not for each of us to choose a Pope. This is moving away from the cornerstone, moving away from the Church”.

This is false: Mgr. Guérard did not only not go, but rather never even imagined or took into consideration the question of Palmar; he disapproved of the fact that Mgr. Thuc had let himself be deceived by them. Further, he always rejected the tendency of certain “Thuc lineage” bishops to claim for themselves a power of jurisdiction and to even elect a pope; he defined such a position as “creative participation … which flatters the spirit of adventure” (Sodalitium no 16, pp. 22 and 24)

Abp Thuc and Gerard des Lauriers, 1981 Episcopal consecration

Michel-Louis Guérard des Lauriers was consecrated a bishop on May 7, 1981.

Consecrator: The consecration was performed by Pierre Martin Ngô Đình Thục, the former Archbishop of Huế, Vietnam.
Location: The ceremony took place in Toulon, France.
Context: This act was part of a traditionalist effort to preserve valid episcopal succession, which led to his ipso facto excommunication by the Vatican in March 1983.

Dominican Theologian who became Sedevacantist

Thirty years ago today, the world lost one of the last great Catholic theologians: On Feb. 27, 1988, the French Dominican Michel-Louis Guérard des Lauriers passed into eternity at 89 years of age. He had entered the novitiate of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) in 1927, was ordained a priest in 1931, and received episcopal consecration in 1981.

As a priest, Guerard des Lauriers taught at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome during the pontificate of Pope Pius XII. He is also said to have been theological advisor to the Pope for the definition of the dogma of the Assumption, as well as the Pope’s confessor for a short time in the early 1950s. In 1969 he was one of the Roman theologians behind the so-called Ottaviani Intervention against the “New Mass” of Paul VI, and some even say he was its main author.
In the 1970s Fr. Guerard des Lauriers worked as a professor at the Society of St. Pius X seminary of Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, but, as his Mexican colleague Fr. Joaquín Sáenz y Arriaga (author of ) did before him, he came to the conclusion that Paul VI could not be a true Pope and eventually ceased his association with the SSPX. In 1981, the Vietnamese Bp. Pierre-Martin Ngo-dinh-Thuc consecrated the French Dominican a bishop in Toulon, France.
Although Guerard des Lauriers was also an exceptional mathematician, his enduring legacy consists, above all, in the so-called Material-Formal Theory he developed as an explanation of the state of sede vacante in the Holy See since Vatican II. This theological position is sometimes referred to as the Cassiciacuм Thesis, the Guerardian Thesis, or Sedeprivationism. In essence, this complex theory holds that although the “popes” since at least Paul VI are not true popes, they nevertheless possess a valid election to the Roman pontificate, and, for this reason, would automatically become pope if they should renounce their heresies and convert to Catholicism. They are, in a sense, “pope-elect” — validly chosen and designated to be pope, but unable to actually be pope because of an obstacle they have placed in the way (the lack of objective intention to promote the good of the Church). This thesis, which rests on considerable theological ground, is adhered to by a number of sedevacantists around the globe, the most well-known proponent of which in the United States is Bp. Donald Sanborn.
One of the distinct advantages of the Guerardian Thesis is that it can explain cogently how it is that a legitimate conclave (as most certainly the one held in 1958 was and probably also that of 1963) could produce a “Pope” who is not actually Pope; and, more importantly, it can answer how the interrupted papal succession can once again resume. In 1985, the Mater Boni Consilii Institute (Institute of the Mother of Good Counsel) was founded in Italy. To this day it is faithful to the theological legacy of Bp. Guerard and assists in the sanctification of souls, the formation of priests, the education of youth, works of charity, and more — all for the glory of God and the salvation of souls.

By the way, the newly-consecrated sedevacantist Bishop Joseph Selway was ordained in the line of Bp. Guerard des Lauriers (–> Robert McKenna [1986] –> Donald Sanborn [2002]).
Let us commend to Almighty God the soul of the man who was quite possibly the last great Dominican theologian, Michel-Louis Guérard des Lauriers. Requiescat in pace.

Archbishop Peter Martin Ngo-Dinh-Thuc, D.D. was a kindly, well-respected Prelate, even by his own people. We recall eating in a restaurant with the Archbishop and another Bishop. As soon as this other Bishop mentioned to the waiter that the visitor dining with us was Archbishop Thuc, we had lots of visitors at our table, from the Vietnamese owner to the waiters, to the cooks, and even some of the other patrons! Without exception, they all treated him with great respect.

We personally observed the Archbishop to be a person who was very much mentally alert, instantly responsive, energetic, reserved, humble, meek, but very much aware of his surroundings and circuмstances, and who listened intently to the various conversations and warmly greeted and acknowledged everyone who approached him. He was definitely not a senile dim-wit with which some people, unfortunately too many so-called "clergy" with their own agendas, try to saddle him. After visiting many people in nursing homes over the years and seeing first-hand what senility really is, there is no way Archbishop Thuc could ever be considered to be senile or somehow mentally incompetent. IF he became that way after he was kidnapped on Thursday, January 19, 1984, almost exactly one year after the above photograph was taken, it would have been drug-induced!

Bishop des Lauriers, O.P., D.D. wrote a tribute to Archbishop Thuc which We understand has been in the public domain on the Internet for some time now. Here is the text of his testimonial. Hopefully, it will help to clear up whatever misunderstandings may have been making the rounds among the so-called "Traditionalist Catholics"?

We understand that the title "Monsignuer", is used by the French to designate Bishops. It does not mean, as it does in the United States, a Priest who has received an honorary title or dignity by having been appointed a "Roman Prelate" or "Prelate of the Roman Court", Romanae Curiae Antistites, to the Papal Court as a Domestic Prelate Illustrissimus et Reverendissimus, the title in English being "Right Reverend Monsignor". (Such was the title given to the local Pastor of Our Parish Church for whom We served many, many Masses for many years.)

Other honorary titles include "Monsignor" and "Reverend Monsignor". The abbreviation for Monsignor is "Msgr.".
By keeping these distinctions in mind, it will hopefully avoid any confusion concerning what the author writes about ARCHBISHOP Thuc when he refers to him as "Monsignuer" Thuc, or by the abbreviation he uses for "Monsignuer", namely "Mgr".
