  • Cardinal John Njue of Nairobi, Kenya, indicated that he, like many African bishops, will not approve the acceptance of ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖity at the Synod of Bishops, in an interview with the Crux web site.

“It’s not a question of criminalizing or condemning, but we have every right to help the person understand that the way you are living is not how you’re supposed to be,” the cardinal told Crux.  “Where there is a mistake, a way must be found to help people who have made the mistake to understand that they have done something wrong and need to turn around.”

Cardinal Njue expressed no sympathy for the suggestion that different episcopal conferences might set different standards of conduct. “If we start operating one way in Africa and another way in Europe and so on, then the image of the Church is distorted,” he said.

The Kenyan cardinal stressed: “The family is at the basis of society, and it’s also at the basis of the Church, so if there is a unified understanding of what the family is all about, then I think we have nothing to lose.”

  • Emphasizing that he was speaking not only on his own behalf, but on behalf of the entire Polish episcopate, Archbishop Stanislaw Gadecki of Poznan addressed the Synod of Bishops on October 10 and said that the reception of Holy Communion by persons in non-sacramental marriages is contrary to the will of Christ.

Archbishop Gadecki’s brief synod address was published in Polish and Italian on the website of the Polish Episcopal Conference.

Citing Sacred Scripture, fourth-century councils, and recent popes, Archbishop Gadecki warned that the admission of such persons to Holy Communion would undermine the Sacrament of Penance and cause “so great damage” not only to the pastoral care of the family but also to the Church’s doctrine on sanctifying grace. Such a change, he said, would be "contrary to the Tradition of the Church."

He concluded by citing Pope Francis, who said that the synod is not being convened to change Church doctrine.

  • We should listen to NONE of them; they have all undermined the faith in one way, shape, or form.

  • Cardinal Francis Arinze, the retired prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship, took a firm stand against changing Church teaching regarding marriage and the reception of the Eucharist, in an interview with the Crux news site.

Marriage creates an indissoluble bond, the Nigerian cardinal insisted, and “not even the authority of the Church can break it.” He added: “We cannot improve on what Christ has said… We cannot be more merciful than Christ.”

“The Eucharist is not something we possess, and we can give to our friends and those with whom we sympathize,” the cardinal continued.

Cardinal Arinze saw the growing influence of the Church in Africa as a welcome counterweight to the secularizing influence of wealthy countries. He remarked: “The richer countries may have more money, but they shouldn’t turn themselves into professors of moral theology just because other countries are poor.”

  • Cardinal Wilfrid Napier of South Africa, who serves as one of the four presidents-delegate of the Synod of Bishops, twice commented on the Synod on his Twitter account on October 15.

He wrote, “As I understand it, Synod2014 was about problems. Synod2015 is about what Family is called to be & to do in Church & world i.e reform both!”

“For African Bishops at Synod key question is how best to prevent breakup happening,” he wrote later. “Best way is thorough preparation & caring accompaniment!”
