Heretics (material/formal) do not adhere to the infallible and Divine rule of faith, to the Catholic Church, which proceeds from the First Truth.

Falser words have never been posted.  By definition a material heretic does adhere to the rule of faith, whereas a formal heretic does not.  That in fact is the very essence of the distinction.  Material heretics are either ignorant or mistaken about WHAT has been proposed for belief by that rule of faith; and the litmus test for distinguishing is the readiness of the material heretic to embrace the truth once corrected about it.

Your argument is not with me Ladislaus.

IMO, it really does not matter whether Jorge Bergoglio is a material heretic or formal heretic.

I agree with this but not because of the reason you give, but because besides speculating about it, it is not up to us to judge such a thing. How long would we have to suffer such punishment? Only the Good Lord knows since he is still in charge. Heresy, even material, still requires a denial of an infallible dogma. We all agree that the jeopardized dogma is EENS and surely we can legitimately resist the Pontiff, but we're in no position to declare him a heretic and even less so, depriving him from office, which would only happens after the Church Herself does it. God knows whether the seat is vacant, ultimately what we need to worry about is the salvation of our own souls.
If anyone says that true and natural water is not necessary for baptism and thus twists into some metaphor the words of our Lord Jesus Christ" Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit" (Jn 3:5) let him be anathema.

  • Thanks. That makes sense.   I thought about writing to Rome and maybe include books and pamphlets on the faith.  I worry about my soul but I worry about my parents and family.  Yes, I worry about their souls too.  Catholics are supporting same sex marriage because the Pope said "who am I to judge".   To hear those words from my Dad was sad.

May God bless you and keep you
