"...Police Scotland said the body was found just before 7.30am on Wednesday in the water near Stronsay, the closest island to Papa Stronsay.
The body was yet to be formally identified, police said, but Evans family, who were from Christchurch, had been informed.

The death was being treated as "unexplained", police said, and an investigation was ongoing.
It said a report would be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal (a public prosecutor in Scotland).
The founder of the monastery, Father Michael Mary, earlier told RNZ it was believed Evans was suffering from "long-term hypothermia".
He called the situation "utterly tragic".
Mary said Evans went by the name Brother Ignatius Maria while at the monastery and had lived there for about two years...."

   A friend of mine was at Papa for about 8 months...he left because geographic conditions were severe, weatherwise. The sea must be very cold in April, but I don't know anything about ocean currents.  Salt water can go below 32F and won't form ice, so 5 Minutes you are likely dead. I stepped in the Arctic ocean for 10 seconds, in the month of late May, and I ran out screaming for pain.

Consider this. He may have gone for a walk along the cliff edges, tripped and fallen, landed on rocks and washed out to sea by the waves and the tide. I know such misadventures occur in Ireland and England. He may have gone out to walk and pray. The likelihood of going for a swim in April is pretty much crazy unless it was ѕυιcιdє. 
The fact is, we may never know what happened. 
Pray for the repose of his soul.

This sounds like the setting and plot for a Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys mystery.

Swimming in 32 °F waters  :confused:

I would instinctively suspect foul play.

"Drownings" are a classically convenient way to get rid of people who may pose problems or embarrassments.

They know he went missing shortly before midnight, April 11.

  These monks must pray Matins at midnight...he didn't show up? Did he take off in a boat? That Bishop N.O., said "...sea conditions..." Who could find out if the weather was very stormy that night?
Quite impossible to go searching in the dark.
If he suffered from Hypothermia along with the others, he would have been shivering very much, and that cannot go unnoticed...and something should have been done > hot tea etc.
60% suspicious: a normal monk has a spiritual director and if he had issues, a visit to a doctor for the correct meds is the way to handle this.

Tragic for everyone.
