Pope Pius IX is on the short list of my greatest heroes!
He was a man of fearless courage, who defied the forces of darkness, despite standing alone and defenseless against them. He sacrificed everything for the sake of one soul, that poor little Mortara child, but he knew that one immortal soul is more precious than all of Christendom. And by the end of his long reign, and his life, he had lost not only the 1,000-year kingdom of the popes, but also the support of most of Christendom, had lost most everything he had in this world, but he had no regrets. Like he could care less what freemasons and Jews and liberal Catholics thought of him. What mattered to him was God, and nothing else.
Truly one of the greatest popes in 2,000 years. He didn't die a martyr, but he may as well have, and he came very close many times. His papacy will never be forgotten until the end of time.
