    • Do you notice any traditional priests having one of these in their sanctuary and lighting it each Sunday in Advent?

    • If you check the Traditional Latin Masses today on https://www.latinmass.live/ you'll not find any advent wreaths.
    These wreaths weren't seen before Vat II and not until about the 1980's in the Novus Ordo.  These wreaths I believe came from the Lutherans.
    AI unfortunately says different.
    The descriptions and meanings listed on line are lovely but we just didn't have them.

    • When I was at the Winona Seminary one of my first jobs was to make a LARGE Advent wreath. Every one appreciates that tradition, but liturgically speaking I think it is not allowed in the sanctuary (often is positioned on the communion rail). It is considered a local custom, and children are usually in awe.

    • The advent wreath may have been “invented” a few centuries ago, but it’s just another example of the christianization of a pagan practice - the winter solstice festivities.  

    Look up the solstice candle and the spiral walk.  Witches put down evergreens in a circle on the ground and walk around with a candle on Dec 21 to worship nature.  Some people started doing this in my neighborhood recently.  

    So Catholics took this idea, and made it holy.

    • Freind, it’s not part of the liturgy which is why it’s done before mass begins.  The church also decorates the sanctuary with Christmas decorations but that’s not part of the liturgy either.  Christmas carols are also not liturgical but people still sing them in church.  

    The may procession of our Lady in springtime (another formerly pagan practice using the “may pole”) is also not a liturgical act but it’s a local custom and there’s nothing wrong with it.  As long as it’s not woven into the mass, it’s a separate devotion which the church allows.

    Candles are not decorations. They are obvious liturgical items. They should not be in the SANCTUARY and lit.
    Did you read what AI answered based on Catholic sources before 1963?

    • You are technically correct but practically wrong.  Most Trad chapels aren't big enough to have a properly sized sanctuary and, room between the sanctuary and pews for things like an advent wreath.  Trad chapels typically have devotional candles lit by the laity in the sanctuary, and that's against the rules as well.  Lots of rules are not followed for practical reasons...the building are too small.

    But in the grand scheme of things, the advent wreath is not part of mass, it's not part of the liturgy, because it's prayers are done before mass.  This is the more important rule and i've never seen it broken.
