This is a well known prophecy. Which Pope do you think it refers to?
What I have seen is terrifying! Will I be the one, or will it be a successor? What is certain is that the Pope will leave Rome and, in leaving the Vatican, he will have to pass over the dead bodies of his priests! Do not tell anyone this while I am alive ...I have seen one of my successors, of the same name, who was fleeing over the dead bodies of his brethren. He will take refuge in some hiding place; but after a brief respite, he will die a cruel death. Respect for God has disappeared from human hearts. They wish to efface even God’s memory. This perversity is nothing less than the beginning of the last days of the world

This is an interesting quote Nishant, do you know where it is sourced from?
The closest might be Piux XII during WWII, but I don't think he ever had to flee over the dead bodies of his priests? We must be waiting for a Pius XIII or Pius XIV...

Unless the dead bodies of the priests refers to spiritual death, then Pius XII definitely fits the image.

Something to also consider here. Pius X birth name is Joseph. Benedict's birth name is also Joseph. It may not be the papal name chosen that this is referring to.

I believe the authentic prophecy DOES NOT include the words "of the same name." It has been a while since I read it but I think I would have remembered that being in there.
However, I suspect we will see another Pope Pius, but he might take that name in honor of Padre Pio instead of the previous pontiffs.

Christopher67 - That is a very interesting comment, but I think that it is referring to Pius XII. Pius XII also died somewhat of a cruel death(hesitancy in personal matters/considered abdicating papacy/hallucinations/nightmares/blood-curdling screams/a change of habits). I hate to flash a mental illness card, but don't these sound like symptoms of it? What could be worse than being struck with a loss of mind(as a pope/head)?

The Pope avoided long ceremonies, canonizations and consistories and displayed hesitancy in personnel matters. During the last years of the pontificate, Pius XII procrastinated personnel decisions within his Vatican, and found it increasingly difficult to chastise subordinates and appointees such as Riccardo Galeazzi-Lisi, who, after numerous indiscretions was excluded from Papal service for the last years, but, keeping his title, was able to enter the papal apartments to make photos of the dying Pope, which he sold to French magazines. Pius underwent cellular rejuvenation treatment, three courses, administered by Dr Paul Niehans, the most important in 1954 when Pacelli was gravely ill. Side-effects of the treatment included hallucinations, from which the Pope suffered in his last years. "These years were also plagued by horrific nightmares. Pacelli's blood-curdling screams could be heard throughout the papal apartments."
Pius XII often elevated young priests as bishops, such as Julius Döpfner (35 years) and Karol Wojtyla (later Pope John Paul II, 38 years), one of his last appointees in 1958.

It's been suggested that he was being poisoned for the last few years of his life.

Illyricuм - even more interesting. However, what about the cruel death clause? Either way, I would like to read more into the pius x prophecy. I will start a search on the web, but if anyone already has a good link, I am interested.
