A Poem

  • Here is a poem that appeared in our parish newsletter that I thought to share with all of you:

    I was shocked, confused, bewildered
    As I entered Heaven's door,
Not by the beauty of it all,
Nor the lights or its decor.

But it was the folks in Heaven
Who made me sputter and gasp---
The thieves, the liars, the sinners,
    The alcoholics and the trash.

There stood the kid from seventh grade
Who swiped my lunch money twice.
Next to him was my old neighbor
    Who never said anything nice.

    Herb, who I always thought
    Was rotting away in hell,
Was sitting pretty on cloud nine,
    Looking incredibly well.

I asked Jesus, "What's the deal?
I would love to hear Your take.
How'd all these sinners get up here?
    God must've made a mistake.

And why is everyone so quiet,
So somber -- give me a clue."
"Hush, child," He said, "they're all in shock.
No one thought they'd be seeing you."

    JUDGE NOT!!
    Remember...just going to church doesn't
make you a Saint any more than standing in
your garage makes you a car.

    Every saint has a PAST...
    Every sinner has a FUTURE!

  • I love it, and that is exactly what I was taught in Catholic school, that we will all be surprised if we get to heaven and see who we didn't expect.

Thanks for sharing, I have to print that one out!
    Please pray for my soul.

  • Myrna, it was in MIQ's semi-annual newsletter.   It has given me much food for thought.

I was gong to stick in into the middle of the Fr. Feeney thread, but thought better of it and posted it separately and in this section.

  • Isn't it odd the timing of things sometimes?

On my word of honor, this is exactly the topic I was pondering/meditating upon this a.m., and discussing with my little one.

    Thanks, Alexandria.

  • There is more truth to it than we know.  Only Our Lord can know what makes a person tick and do the things he/she does.  It is best if we leave such things as judging the final destination of folks to Him.  :farmer:

I don't like this at all. It sounds very anti- "organized religion".

It would be comparatively easy for us to be holy if only we could always see the character of our neighbours either in soft shade or with the kindly deceits of moonlight upon them. Of course, we are not to grow blind to evil

  • One still has to be in the state of grace to attain Heaven.

Problem is, we don't know who is or isn't in the state of grace.

In many cases, however, we can be morally certain.

"Going to Church" won't get you to heaven is a common saying for people who don't believe the worship of God is actually required.

That may be so but the motives of the those saying it do not determine whether or not the statement is true.

But that is not what is says.  This is what it says:

God requires that we worship Him; He does not require that we stand in our garage. Look, it sounds protestant to me. It's just an opinion.

  • I think the whole point of the poem is, that we don't know who will eventually get to heaven, it is that last moment that determines our state of soul.

Many people who seem like saints, my not be at all, we can't judge, and some that we view as sinners, could very well convert, if someone is praying for them.

Our Lady said, "see Hell, this is where so many fall, because there is no one to pray for them."  We as Catholics, must have a zeal for souls, God loves everyone, and He died for us all.
    Please pray for my soul.

We can know however, with a moral certainty, of those who are saved and lost. Surely, there will also be cases where we cannot know.
