  • I just saw this on another forum. I don't know if it is true but this is what they said;
     Pour préserver la nature, le Pape demande aux catholiques de remplacer la consommation de poisson le vendredi par un jeûne complet.

    Selon une information dévoilée par l’APIC (Association des Pêcheurs Italiens Catholiques), le Saint-Siège s’apprêterait à abroger une très ancienne tradition chrétienne : la consommation de poisson le vendredi, en particulier durant le Carême.
    Le Pape François, qui a montré dès le début de son Pontificat un grand souci écologique pour préserver la Création, s’est en effet ému du sort tragique des millions de créatures aquatiques qui sont sacrifiées chaque vendredi pour l’alimentation des fidèles.

    Il préconise, en remplacement, aux catholiques du monde entier de s’abstenir ce jour-là de toute nourriture en effectuant un jeûne complet, ce qui permettra en outre de "préserver les ressources naturelles de la planète et de réduire la faim dans le monde".

    Les habituelles dérogations en fonction de l’âge et de la santé des personnes seraient maintenues. Tout le détail de ces mesures sera décrit dans un docuмent officiel à paraître ce mardi, le Motu Proprio Piscis Aprilis.

    Si les amis des animaux se réjouissent déjà de cette décision importante, les réactions des professionnels de la pêche et de la corporation des poissonniers sont beaucoup plus hostiles : une délégation doit être reçue à ce sujet par le Cardinal Fisch, Préfet de la Congrégation pour la Protection de la Nature.

    A rough translation is as follows;

    To preserve nature , the Pope asks Catholics to replace the consumption of fish on Friday by a complete fast .

    According to information released by the APIC (Association of Italian Catholic Fishermen ) , the Holy See is preparing to repeal an ancient Christian tradition of eating fish on Fridays, especially during Lent.
    Pope Francis, who showed at the beginning of his Pontificate great ecological concern to preserve creation, has in effect moved the plight of millions of aquatic creatures that are killed for food every Friday of the faithful.

    He advocates , instead, the world's Catholics to abstain on that day from food by performing a complete fast , which will also help to " preserve the natural resources of the planet and reduce hunger in the world " .

    The usual exceptions depending on the age and health of persons would be maintained. All the details of these measures will be described in an official docuмent to be published on Tuesday , the Motu Proprio Piscis Aprilis .

    If animal lovers are looking forward to this important decision , the reactions of professional fishermen and fishmongers corporation are much more hostile : a delegation must be received about Fisch by Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Nature Conservation .

    Yeah Francis let's save the fish and let the 25% of the world's population that rely on food from the sea starve to death, you are really bright.

    How about we live in total darkness and throw away our light bulbs while we are at it ?

    When the fishermen are out of work and their kids are going hungry you can blame it on the capitalists.

    Fridays in Lent used to be days of Fast. That was the traditional observance. A little more asceticism on Friday will probably do us some good.

    Maybe so, but I think that we should reflect on how we are observing Lent. Where is the sacrifice when we give up meat on Friday only to gorge ourselves on fish, lobster or other seafood?

  • Once again, assuming this is really an April Fools joke, the real story is that the article noting that Bergoglio "showed at the beginning of his Pontificate great ecological concern to preserve creation," is entirely believable.

    There is simply no story that could be told about the Conciliar sect that would not be believable.  Absolutely nothing reported is outside the realm of possibility.

    Had the news reported that Bergoglio had waived the usual procedures for canonizations and Martin Luther will be canonized on "Reformation Day", no one would have simply laughed it off as an absurd parody!

  • Exactly right, TKGS.  What makes for a good April Fool's joke like this is that it has to be at least somewhat plausible so that, despite your knowing it's April 1 you come away with "Is this real or is it an April Fool's joke?"  It says a lot that people considered this somewhat plausible vis-a-vis Francis.

    Because the mortification intended is primarily that of the will; in fact, it's the supreme form of mortification.  My father-in-law used to love seafood, but he mentioned one day about Lent, "You know, during the year there are many days that I don't eat meat and don't even miss it or don't even notice, but it's hard not to eat meat on Fridays."  I told him that it's because you CANNOT eat it; it's a mortification of the will.  When you eat fish at any other time it's because you WANT to eat it.

  • April Fool's joke or not, the story has the scent of truth (pun intended). I can see Jorge being more concerned about saving fish than saving souls.
    "This principle is most certain: The non-Christian cannot in any way be Pope. The reason for this is that he cannot be head of what he is not a member. Now, he who is not a Christian is not a member of the Church, and a manifest heretic is not a Christian, as is clearly taught by St. Cyprian, St. Athanasius, St. Augustine, St. Jerome, and others. Therefore, the manifest heretic cannot be Pope." -- St. Robert Bellarmine

    Except for this little tidbit from the article:

    Oh, I don't mean that the story is true; it's a fraud that has just enough plausible truth to come across as real. What I'm saying is that Jorge seems to be more of an ecologist than a shepherd of souls, and I can very easily imagine his speaking these words. After all, if a putative Pope can say that there's no Catholic God, he'll say anything.

    I too can picture francis putting the wellbing of fish ahead of concern for salvation making a silly claim about the ecology with shallow regards towards the "Catholic fishing industry" and then scapegoating capitalism for the ensuing famine. Heck, he would probably promote the 2nd invasion of the Falkland Islands and the butchering of the "English terrorists" over the entire ordeal,

    What makes it clear this is a hoax would be the fact anyone would entertain that francis would order a fast showing reverence to the Lord. If anything he would mock such a notion.

  • Did you see the bottom where it says the 'motu proprio' is called Piscis Aprilis? In other words the Latin for the French "Poisson d'avril" or "April Fish" meaning "April Fools?" Americans really need to study languages more.

    Obviously it's a spoof. As a trad and an American, I'd like to encourage all others who fall into these categories - lighten up!
