  • $5 million priest abuse verdict against Catholic Diocese of Belleville upheld at appellate court
1/22/2011 9:33 AM By Ann Knef

The Fifth District Appellate Court has upheld a $5 million jury verdict against the Catholic Diocese of Belleville in a St. Clair County sɛҳuąƖ abuse case.

Justice Bruce Stewart wrote the opinion released Jan. 21. Justice Thomas Welch concurred; Justice Stephen Spomer dissented.

The lawsuit was filed in 2002 by James Wisniewski. He claimed he was sɛҳuąƖly abused by priest Raymond Kownacki numerous times between 1973 and 1978.

His claims against the Diocese included negligence, willful and wanton conduct, fraud and deceit and civil conspiracy. Wisniewski alleged that the Diocese knew that Kownacki had molested other children at other parishes before transferring him to St. Theresa's school and church in Salem.

In a case presided over by Circuit Judge Lloyd Cueto in 2008, a jury awarded Wisniewski $2.4 million in compensatory damages and $2.6 in punitive damages.

The Diocese, represented by David Wells and Catherine Schroeder of Thompson and Coburn in St. Louis, had argued: that Wisniewski's claims were barred by statute of limitations and statute of repose; his claims were insufficient as a matter of law; that the circuit court abused its discretion in denying the Diocese's motion for a mental examination of Wisniewski; and that circuit court abused its discretion by striking certain references from the records and testimony of one of Wisniewski's witnesses.

Wisniewski was represented by Weilmuenster & Wigginton of Belleville and former Illinois Supreme Court Justice Philip of Troy.

  • Once again, it's not just child abuse or pedophilia, but ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖity which is the real issue.

Priests didn't commit these sins because they were celibate -- it was because they were ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖ. It's always boys.

We can thank Vatican II and its "opening up to the modern world" -- modern philosophy, morality, psychology including the pervert Sigmund Freud, the introduction of Sex Ed to seminarians, the introduction of TV into seminaries, etc.

  • To be clear, the abuse of the person in the story started when he was 12 and continued until he was 17.  This was not pedophilia.

    Another story on this:

So right, Matthew! The Church always had rules in place to prevent candidates with disorderly inclinations, and they started flouting those rules. The statistics all show that since the 60's all of this perversion increased drastically, so it is no coincidence. But even more importantly, St. Paul gave us in Scripture a reason for sodomites themselves....

"Because that, when they knew God, they have not glorified him as God, or given thanks; but became vain in their thoughts"

"Who changed the truth of God into a lie"

"And as they liked not to have God in their knowledge, God delivered them up to a reprobate sense"

Ultimately, it is directly associated with the heresy of Vatican II. The ecuмenical heresies. But the Media won't go there. They want to make everyone think it is associated with the Church, not because, in reality, it is directly associated with the opposite - abandonment of the Catholic Church's traditional rules and doctrines.
