  • I recommend pasting quotes into Notepad first before posting here.

In any case, this is a key prophecy that makes sense only with the sedevacantist position.

With R&R, how would "the succession of Peter and the other apostles [seem] to have expired" ... and the Church "seem to be extinguished"?

That's the chief criticism of sedevacantism from the R&R camp, that this would be incompatible with Petrine (and Apostolic) succession to have a vacancy of this length.

  • The prophecy of St. Nicholas of Fluh (1417-1487): “The Church will be punished because the majority of her members, high and low, will become so perverted. The Church will sink deeper and deeper until she will at last seem to be extinguished, and the succession of Peter and the other apostles to have expired. But, after this, she will be victoriously exalted in the sight of all doubters.”

  • What is the source of this quote?

I've seen it floating around since the Yves Dupont book.

  • It seems that St. Nikolaus von Flüe never made prophecies.

    See sedevacantist.com.

In one of his books, Johann Joseph Ignaz von Döllinger, who rejected the Vatican Council, presents a similar quote:

    Quote
that the Church would sink still deeper, so that at last she would seem to be extinguished and even the succession of S. Peter and the other Apostles to die out.1 Then, however, she would triumphantly raise herself once more in the sight of all doubters.2

He says that it's from Nikolaus von Kues, the Cardinal. But the Latin in the footnote does not say what Döllinger says it says.

  • So it would appear that Yves Dupont mis-attributed this from Nicholas of Cusa to St. Nicholas of Flue.

I reckon, Dupont had it from Döllinger, and Döllinger invented it.

On the forum post to which you linked, it doesn't necessarily seem as if Döllinger invented it.  Perhaps Nicholas of Cusa did make such a comment?  I don't think anyone's tracked down the original from Nicholas of Cusa.  Döllinger did give a footnote to the Latin works of NC, but good luck finding those to verify the quotes.

They link the book of Döllinger. Döllinger gives a Latin quote in the footnote allegedly of the Cardinal. But the quote does say neither "Church" nor "Peter" nor "succession" ...

Right, I saw that, but it's not entirely evident to me what he was trying to show with the Latin, whether it was a translation, or just an addendum to the main text.  I think someone would have to actually find the works of Nicholas of Cusa to see what's going on.  He gave a second footnote for the second part of this quotation wrongly attributed to St. Nicholas of Flue, but there was no Latin text there.

For whatever you want to say about Döllinger, I doubt that he knew so little Latin that he could not immediately realize that this was not a translation.  If he wanted to fabricate something, he would have just left the citation without the Latin.  I get the impression he's quoting something as a supplemental thought.  Or he could have just made up a quotation without a citation.  Who knows?  And I doubt anyone will take the time to track this down.

  • Well, if Cusanus said what Döllinger said he said, he started from what he saw in the 15th century, and today his triumphant raise of the Church is long past.

    Quote from: Döllinger
Ryckel's contemporary and friend, the most profound thinker of his time, Cardinal Nicolas of Cusa, like him became a Prophet, without exactly claiming for his predictions a higher measure of illumination. Cusa also saw through the deep corruption of the Church and its main cause, viz. the despotism and covetousness of the Papacy at that time ; and hence he too came to the conviction, to which, after he had outlived the miscarriage of the reforming Councils, he gave utterance as a prophecy; — that the Church would sink still deeper, so that at last she would seem to be extinguished and even the succession of S. Peter and the other Apostles to die out. Then, however, she would triumphantly raise herself once more in the sight of all doubters.
