What return shall I make to the Lord for all the things that He hath given unto me?

  • It would be for a computer, the owner of which insists on using IE despite my many pleas that Firefox be used instead.

It's free and better than Norton.

Under where it says: AVG AntiVirus Free, Click the Download Now button, if it asks, you may need to hit "run" to install.

    Thanks, Stubborn!

I used AVG for a while on my own laptop about 2 or 3 years ago but I removed it because they kept sending me ads for upgrading to a paid subscription.  I don't think my father would like that.  It's his computer I'm trying to liberate from Norton.

  • How good is AVG, i use Norton Internet Security with 360 and
it works and does the job. I heard about other ones that are
quite well but expensive.  Thanks for the information btw.

  • AVG is fine. None are great, but that's the price of doing business I guess.

  • If I was to download the free version of AVG at what point would it be best to remove Norton?

When I did it, I uninstalled Norton *before* installing AVG.

I had both Norton and McAfee  - uninstalled them because they were bogging down my computer - AVG seems to use a lot less resources, I never even notice it and it works at least as well as the others.

  • I just went to their forum and saw complaints about being bombarded with invitations to upgrade. I recall having trouble removing it from my laptop. I ended up just using Linux with Firefox and that worked well. But this won't be possible for my elderly father.

  • I never had that problem, might be something they started doing recently.

Since webroot came with this computer, I just renew every year for about $30/year.

This is really the only thing "wrong" with AVG.  It does the job it's supposed to do just fine.  But it's open source (free) so of course they'll "bug" you to pay for what you're using, occasionally.

This can be a little difficult for older generations to "understand," but if your dad can swing it, AVG is the way to go.  The alternative is spending $100+ on McAfee or Norton, both of which will be utter resource hogs and tell your dad that he has a virus every ten minutes.

IMO, the occasional pop-ups asking you to upgrade are more than worth it.  After all, you're not paying anything for it :)

Avast! is another alternative to AVG.  It's also open-source, and I'm not sure if it "bothers you" with pop-ups to purchase as much as AVG or not-- but again, if you're not paying, you'll be dealing with the pop-ups to some degree or another.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • Do you suppose they'll leave my father alone if he has a paid subscription? If so, then it would be worth it.

  • I've never paid for AVG, but the only pop up I get with webroot is once a year letting me know I have a month to renew my subscription. I imagine AVG would be the same far as that goes.

  • Would you reccomend both AVG and Webroot? Shouldn't one or the other be enough?
