I'm a long time Mac user, but I need to have a Windows PC at home now and would like some advice.

Oh and how is Windows 7pro?

Windows 7 is rock solid, but a pain to update, Windows 10 is a positive upgrade from Windows 7, very smooth, background updates, tracks everything you do.
This is why I use Linux, Arch based Linux like Manjaro Gnome is my personal favorite. Just enable the Dash-to-panel extension, and you have a Windows 10 like Desktop.

I held out going with 10, was absolutely content with 7 and would still have 7 if it didn't finally crash after 6 years.
I bought a new computer with 10 a few months ago and after a very short learning curve, I can say 10 is fine, might be a little better far as speed goes. It's the latest so should be able to work with whatever new programs come out for the next 10 years - hopefully.

I have windows 8.
Heard yesterday on the news that Microsoft is planning not to send updates for windows 10 if your computer is 4 years and
older.

10 is faster
7 is more user friendly and compatible
