  • I think it hasn't been said. But the problem with switching to other job field. Is that they demand you experience for every job. It's difficult to start working on a new field these days because without experience you can't get a job, but you can't get experience without a job. It's a Catch-22 situation.

So ... you CAN find some jobs where if you get the training and certification, and there's higher demand, and plenty of openings, you can get in.  Yeah, you'll initially take a paycut compared to where you might have ended up in IT after 30 years or so, but it's better than nothing, and it it's in a high-demand field where there's a shortage, the wages will go up quickly, as it's a laborer's market rather than employer's.

You can use ChatGPT to help you work it out.  Just interrogate it.

I'm looking for a career change, into a field where there are plenty of entry-level opportunities and decent pay (define exactly what you need) due to there being a shortage of qualified labor, something you could get into after a year or two of training (to get the necessary certification), and perhaps isn't TOO physically demanding.  You just have to find something that hits the criteria.

  • Same here. People make helpful suggestions, but either they are "way off" for me personally, for someone in my geographical area, for someone my age, someone with my family situation, someone with my skills and temperament, etc.
I want to underline how long I've been a software dev, how long I've identified and worked successfully as a software dev, and how long (zero) I've ever considered other lines of work.
It's crazy to me that this line of work isn't working anymore.

It's like running out of food for the first time in your life, and someone lists off your possible courses of action: "we could go to the KFC dumpster, we could go forage for food in the woods, we could beg on the street for food" and you just throw up your hands, silently walk to your bedroom, and close the door -- because who could make such a decision? They all seem equally insane to you. If you indeed have to do one of those things, it's going to have to be later, because I can't right now.

As mentioned earlier, perhaps interrogate ChatGPT as per above.  Give it your criteria, part of the country, likes or dislikes, look for high-demand fields that you can get trained relatively quickly in, where there are plenty of entry-level openings for decent pay, and then see what it can do for you.

I've always enjoyed programming, and even if I do end up switching careers, I'd still do it on my own for "fun" .... a little bit, but it's also gotten old for me, and I'd relish a change where I'd feel I could be helping people a bit more directly.  It's alway uncomfortable to switch out of the "only thing I know", and I'm in the same boat, where IT has been the only thing I can do to earn a decent paycheck.

  • CNC lathes -- I first saw that term reading the classifieds in my hometown's newspaper. Rockford, IL. A manufacturing town, or at least it used to be. I don't know how much MFG we have in this part of Texas.

One thing for sure -- moving is 100% out of the question. I have a large family, and a very complicated homestead we've built up for years. We have WAY too many roots here to uproot now. Just for starters, Texas is where I want to raise my kids. Money isn't everything. I'll find something eventually, that I can do online, or some other random field. But we have to stay here, that's one thing I've decided.
Continuing prayers for you to find a good job.

  • See, I'm one of the old-school devs that developed serious skills before AI was invented.
So in theory I should "be good".
Maybe employers don't realize this yet? Maybe they need to wake up to the real situation, outlined in the video below, and hire guys like me before they get snatched up by someone else?

This 6 minute video talks about the long-term problems of younger developers relying on AI to appear so productive and fast.

  • The economy is in shambles. We keep hearing trump saying it’s the best ever. Jobs are everywhere no one wants to work. We have to bring in more cheap labor. It’s suicidal. It’s so frustrating. I’m filling out applications online and it’s like they disappear in a black hole you don’t hear back at all or they send you an email saying “ they are going a different direction” what ever that means. I’m starting to get nervous. I can’t find a an entry level position that pays more than 15$ an hour with no benefits. I made the mistake of working trades my whole life and never getting certified in anything. I hope the young guys hear that and get certified. Get certified in anything. Forklift, osha, ect….. what ever it is you do. Age 40 and up no one wants you on these labor roles unless your certified. Even if you know more than those certified. It’s all about insurance and paperwork now. Loyalty and real world experience get you no where. And it’s obvious in Knoxville it’s all about the companies bottom line because temp positions and full time positions are no where. They want to work you 30 hours what ever the limit is just below benefits. They will keep you in that loop forever it seems with empty promises of putting you full time at some point. It’s scary. I’m praying for everyone going through it.

Do you have a Costco nearby? They are always looking for employees.  I could imagine that some of your skill set (fork lift operator) would be useful.  My son started cart collecting at $19 an hour, but that is in Maryland.  With them fill out the application and then go meet them, that is how my son did it.  Would that work with other jobs?  I think so. I have always found that giving them an actual face to look at changes your position in the cue.  Maybe I have just been lucky all my life. Prayers for you.

Looks like you have a new angle for advertising yourself.

This is my problem with everyone pushing for the latest and greatest machines. It is often so much quicker and easier to do things manually, rather than have to work around the limitations of a machine. In my opinion, machines should be developed to be better, but saved only for when they are really needed and for when they will work well. If we get too reliant on machines, then nobody will have the skills to take over when they fail. It is hard to build a machine that can beat what humans are capable of. Of course a machine can do a specialized task way better/faster, but not everything a human can do all in one package. Whether supercomputer, or giant hydraulic machine, they have their limits where people can out perform them.
