My script gathered over 500 IP address ranges while I was at work today.
Not 500 IP addresses, but 500 BLOCKS or ranges of IP addresses.
Of course, being at work, I couldn't actually add them to the server blacklist until I got home.
I have done so now.

You really should consider using Cloudflare, which can actually detect and block bots based on their behavior rather than your having to play whack-a-mole with scripts gathering IP addresses.  It's free for some pretty decent bot-blocking features.

I wonder what the potential downside of using cloudflare is. It is a bit suspicious and concerning that so many websites are practically forced to rely on one common solution. Sound's like a weak spot to me. A potential solution to an engineered problem type of thing.

Well, early on, conspiracy theorists claimed that the antivirus companines were the ones developing viruses.

I believe the massive increase in both traffic comes from the AI training that's constantly going on, but it it making solutiosn cloud Cloudflare almost indespensible.  You can can some solid bot-blocking capabilities for free.

Still isn’t working!  Times out when signing on, shuts off when hitting post.

"An engineered problem type of thing."

Sounds exactly like the problem everyone faces if they refuse to put some kind of spyware protection on their computer.

It always boils down to consent. We have to consent to our surveillance. You want to use the internet? Oh, you mean you cannot get along in this world without the internet? Well then, you must consent to, and even pay for us perpetually ransacking your computer.

On a postive note, communicating by sending letters, or writing notes on paper rather than in a computer, which is how we will did things not so long ago, remain relatively shielded from surveillance.
