I am under HEAVY attack right now. Some time after I posted (7:19 AM) the attack begun and now I'm adding hundreds of bot ranges per hour. I'm going to keep up with it all day; at least I'll blacklist a ton of them by the end of the day.

I'm considering having an "under attack" mode for CathInfo, where bots and THOSE NOT LOGGED IN TO AN ACCOUNT only see a basic login form. That way, the bots that get through my filter don't get much from my server -- they will end up leaving more quickly, keeping the pipes a bit clearer.

The flood seems to be over now. I've blocked all the malicious bot addresses I gathered, and "is it down right now.com" reports CI is accessible.

Wow, sounds like the bots are getting more advanced and more numerous! (I had trouble getting this post to load). 

Do you think that it will not be feasible to block them all manually as they become more advanced? I assume you're hosting the site locally. There are such things as tunnels or automatic IP whitelisters? "Cloudflare, Fail2Ban, LocalTunnel". I dont know much about these things. I assume that these are all paid services and would increase the cost of upkeep to the site.

Or I like your idea of limiting Guest privileges and requiring login. I think that would be a good temporary fix.
