Title: Thumbs updown being censored?
Post by: ihsv on April 18, 2016, 07:02:07 PM
I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation for this, but in thumbing down posts or thumbing them up, periodically (and only for specific people), I've been getting the following messages:

Thumb down:  If this post by __________ is so bad, I'm sure others will notice it too. They will give a thumbs-down for you. ;)

Thumb up:  I'm sure __________ appreciates your support, but let's give others a turn.

Anyone else running into this?

I have not noticed this happening for me. I'm guessing it's related to the switch to the new server.

It's always been that way; there's an algorithm in place which prevents more than a certain percentage of thumbs down (or up) coming from a single person.

It's been like this for years, but it's more noticeable when the "likes" database gets so small.

During the initial attacks April 2, I trimmed a lot of databases to make things lean and mean. Of course today I'm no longer strapped for CPU power, so I'm not going to trim them anymore going forward.

But to build up the votes database, and "recover it" as it were, it would help if lots of people would participate in voting on stuff (yea or nay).

Why do I block votes in the first place? Simple. This is a Traditional Catholic forum. Some arguments get heated, and Trads in general have very strong opinions and have a tendency to strive with each other. If you get involved in serious discussions to any degree, you WILL form one or more enemies, or at least people who disagree with you strongly.

You wouldn't want one person or even two individuals, to be able to destroy your Reputation score. So I restrict likes/dislikes to a certain % of the total votes you have received.

If an idiot posts something stupid, he'll get plenty of downvotes so you won't exceed the percentage. But if it's "just you" that thinks he's an idiot, I don't want you able to smash his score. Same goes for cheerleading.

It's too easy to look up all of a person's past posts and start down-thumbing (or up-thumbing) away.

Thanks for the explanation.  Makes more sense now.
