I was laid off from my last job.
My last job was great and a perfect fit -- React Native, PHP, MySQL, Javascript. I worked hybrid (in-office/remote) for a while, then switched to remote for the last 8 months.
I did a lot of great work for them including a very complex iOS/Android app with its own API on the backend.
My boss and co-workers were all 25 or younger, but my boss was a bit unique: he actually valued my age and experience. His family is some kind of fundamentalist Protestant (he said 7th Day Adventist came closest) but interestingly he was an apostate from their religion. But he seemed to keep his respect for elders -- a very UNUSUAL trait among Gen Z (which is notorious for making a huge deal out of ANY age gap. Some Zoomers get upset if a 30 year old man pursues a 20 year old woman. "What could they possibly have in common!" and all that. I wish I was joking or exaggerating.)
He was (and still is?) very happy with my work. Unfortunately, he was forced to let someone go, and I couldn't honestly expect him to choose someone else for the layoff. The others are Gen Z, buddies, in-office, cheaper, and supervised the interns. So there was really no other way.
The main company (in California) needed to reduce their expenses. They used to have 1 developer, and now they had 4 plus a few interns.
What's strange is that they set up a new office in San Antonio when I was first hired. They wanted their software devs out of the fray of office politics.
Interestingly, I only made about $18,000 more than the 22 year old (how much experience could he possibly have?) so it's not like I was expensive or making bank.
Since the age of 18, I've done nothing ELSE than software development, except for 3 1/2 years at the seminary. So we're talking 25+ years experience.
Incidentally, I (in my late 40's) had better attendance, was more reliable, and was sick less than anyone else at the office (the oldest of whom was 25). How pathetic is that?
Anyhow, that's the gist of it. Software Development is one of the worst careers for job security.
Now I'm looking for a new Software Developer position, and/or some kind of side income compatible with my state in life, past experience, and talents. I was thinking some kind of teaching or tutoring gig. But considering my ability to design and create an app from scratch (among many other things) I really think I'm most useful in that sphere.
To use an analogy: if software were the physical world, I'd be able to design a house, build it, modify/fix it, put in plumbing/electricity/internet/solar/etc., finish it out (drywall, painting, trim, etc.) and deliver in a competitive timeframe. It would look decent (but not too artsy) and it would be secure as well, both against thieves as well as pests. And also be able to market the finished house on various realtor websites, write up docuмentation about every detail of the house, etc.
Imagine a guy who could do all that, being unemployed. But that's me. I'm basically a cyber handyman, a Mr. Fix It of the digital world, like a Class A mechanic who can make whatever tools and parts he needs to fix any machine.
