Out of Work

  • I was laid off from my last job.

My last job was great and a perfect fit -- React Native, PHP, MySQL, Javascript. I worked hybrid (in-office/remote) for a while, then switched to remote for the last 8 months.

I did a lot of great work for them including a very complex iOS/Android app with its own API on the backend.
My boss and co-workers were all 25 or younger, but my boss was a bit unique: he actually valued my age and experience. His family is some kind of fundamentalist Protestant (he said 7th Day Adventist came closest) but interestingly he was an apostate from their religion. But he seemed to keep his respect for elders -- a very UNUSUAL trait among Gen Z (which is notorious for making a huge deal out of ANY age gap. Some Zoomers get upset if a 30 year old man pursues a 20 year old woman. "What could they possibly have in common!" and all that. I wish I was joking or exaggerating.)

He was (and still is?) very happy with my work. Unfortunately, he was forced to let someone go, and I couldn't honestly expect him to choose someone else for the layoff. The others are Gen Z, buddies, in-office, cheaper, and supervised the interns. So there was really no other way.

The main company (in California) needed to reduce their expenses. They used to have 1 developer, and now they had 4 plus a few interns.
What's strange is that they set up a new office in San Antonio when I was first hired. They wanted their software devs out of the fray of office politics.

Interestingly, I only made about $18,000 more than the 22 year old (how much experience could he possibly have?) so it's not like I was expensive or making bank.

Since the age of 18, I've done nothing ELSE than software development, except for 3 1/2 years at the seminary. So we're talking 25+ years experience.

Incidentally, I (in my late 40's) had better attendance, was more reliable, and was sick less than anyone else at the office (the oldest of whom was 25). How pathetic is that?

Anyhow, that's the gist of it. Software Development is one of the worst careers for job security.

Now I'm looking for a new Software Developer position, and/or some kind of side income compatible with my state in life, past experience, and talents. I was thinking some kind of teaching or tutoring gig. But considering my ability to design and create an app from scratch (among many other things) I really think I'm most useful in that sphere.

To use an analogy: if software were the physical world, I'd be able to design a house, build it, modify/fix it, put in plumbing/electricity/internet/solar/etc., finish it out (drywall, painting, trim, etc.) and deliver in a competitive timeframe. It would look decent (but not too artsy) and it would be secure as well, both against thieves as well as pests.  And also be able to market the finished house on various realtor websites, write up docuмentation about every detail of the house, etc.
Imagine a guy who could do all that, being unemployed. But that's me. I'm basically a cyber handyman, a Mr. Fix It of the digital world, like a Class A mechanic who can make whatever tools and parts he needs to fix any machine.

    Yeah pic related.

22yr old gets set up and attacked by zoomers because he was interested in an 18 yr old (16 is Age of Consent)

    They are really brainwashed.

Anyway good luck on finding another job.

  • My husband's job is programming. He doesn't have a degree. He basically worked his way from fixing up electronics (working min. wage) to proving himself to his boss, working at that company for almost a decade. And then he was able to get a remote job when Covid happened. Some of his coworkers would try to get him fired or try to replace him but he's good at what he does. He also believes in efficiency and developed a software that made the company more money by making things more productive. But I mean his job is not exactly stable as his boss could replace him with someone from India for example. His boss has already tried expanding to a different country, one in Africa, and the workers have been slacking off.

But, yeah, hope you are able to get another stable job to support your family.

Nope, the (local) boss is white. One dev is hispanic and the other is Japanese-white.
Even stranger, the owner of the company in California is Germanic and white. About my age too! He should have been more compassionate. I met him during a work trip to Cali.

  • I'm very sorry to hear that, Matthew.  That's actually a major reason I work two jobs here ... because if I do happen to get laid off (cut loose) from one of them, I would at least have the other to pay for some very bare essentials.

Very similar to my situation.  I got my degree in ... Greek and Latin (and went through graduate school), and then also spent some years at seminary.  I had taught myself computer programming when I was about 10, and did take a class or two as an undergraduate.  But I started with computer (and other hardware ... printers, etc.) repair.  Then I took a pay cut to get an entry-level development job, then learned on the job ... and then since COVID have been remote ever since.  I think they can't afford to let me go at my companies, since there are quite a few systems that only I know anything about, but then anything is possible in a bit of a downturn.

Along the way, I was working at NASA during 9/11 and I made some very innocuous comments on a NASA chat board in response to some clown who was demanding that the US turn Afghanistan into a "sheet of glass", basically just saying that it's immoral to kill all the innocent people who had nothing to do with it.  This was before I figured out 9/11 had been an inside job.  I was told by my manager that several people wanted me fired for that very mild comment.

  • What did you write the Android/IOS app in?

So, one of my companies just hired some React (and we use MySQL here) ... but that was just 2-3 months ago.  I'll keep an eye out in case one of them vacate the position and/or they need more.  I'm working on he back end myself with Java / MySQL (and my other job is C# .NET / SQL Server) and know very little about React/Angular.  Company is fully remote (no offices), with individuals in Tennesee, Louisiana, Ohio (myself), Kansas, Arizona, Florida ... etc.  Every couple years, they force us to fly in to Phoenix to do these "team builders" (which I despise), but since it's only every once in a while, I can deal with it.

It was in React Native. I'm also working on another React Native app in my spare time.
I've done native Android development as well. But beyond that, my main languages are Javascript, PHP, Java, and MySQL (or equivalent) in the DB realm. But I've dabbled and worked in many other things as well over the years -- 25 years is a long time.

Great, Matthew.  I'll keep an eye out.  As mentioned, this one company I work with does use React heavily (as well as MySQL and Java ... though, if you know MySQL you can pretty much work with any DB, with the learning curve mostly in writing stored procs like in SQL Server or Oracle since they have Transact-SQL and PL/SQL, but a developer could pick those up in no time).  We also use Java here.  I myself an working on a Java + MySQL API backend, so you could probably slide right in to take over this job of mine.  And this company is growing.  I don't want to reveal which one it is, or even the vertical, but some recent legal ruling have worked in their favor, where there's a huge potential for growth in the next few years.  Perhaps you could PM me.  If I have a resume with emphasis on your React / Java / MySQL, I could submit that to the CTO here and get you first in the pipeline in case they're looking for someone (with my personal recommendation).  Having React / Java / MySQL would make you a perfect fits for this company.
