  • Does anyone run linux and if so, how would I go about switching to this or running it?

  • If you want a dual-boot computer, you may need to repartition your hard disk reserve room for Linux.  But if you run Windows 10, you can install at least part of, say, Ubuntu Linux, Debian Linux, or another versions of that operating system,  I installed Ubuntu on my Windows 10 laptop because I decided not to install the full distribution of Linux Mint.  If you install Ubuntu "the Windows way" I did, it won't give you a desktop when you run it.  Instead, you'll need to use the command line and the bash shell, a command interpreter.

  • As best I can discern, the SepioOS is the most secure Linux-based system and comes with features designed to control access to the camera, microphone, USB, storage device, BIOS, etc.  It comes pre-loaded with VPNs, cryptocurrency wallets, ham radio digital software (fldigi) and even an integrated Virtual Machine that will spoof MAC addresses, I2P, and sandboxed apps. https://combatstudiesgroup.blogspot.com/p/store.html

Having recently built a Linux machine from components, I think the asking price for the Sepio 2 is a bargain.

Also, I highly recommend K's GroundRod classes so that you can wring out all the features of the Sepio. https://combatstudiesgroup.blogspot.com/p/courses.html

Another alternative if security is your goal, consider using the TailsOS:  https://tails.boum.org/

  • Thank you, everyone.  I haven't used Linux in about 15 years, but these new distributions make me want to revisit it.

I used to program PERL with the good old VI editor ... lots of fun.

  • I have used Linux Mint full-time since 2011. It just gets better every year. Part time and/or Ubuntu for a few years before that.

So I've been using Linux for a while. Today, all my home PCs use Linux, including the wife & kids' PCs.

Our software budget is approximately $0/year. It's great!  But it's better than that -- we always have everything up-to-date as well. Years ago, we stuck with Windows XP and didn't spend much on software, but we were more out-of-date with every passing year. Now we have the best of both worlds.

I used to use an aging (but legit) copy of Photoshop 6.0, but I soon realized that a 20-year-newer version of GIMP was superior. The same for other software. We switched from an aging copy of Office 2003 to the latest LibreOffice, and don't really miss anything.

I use Linux Mint with the MATE desktop (yes, you get to choose your desktop, which is basically the skin or look & feel or what you actually see and interact with). If you want fancy, you should go with the Cinnamon desktop. Mint is one of the best distributions of Linux. It has all the advantages of Ubuntu, but a team of dedicated developers has developed some apps and other polish for it, which I really miss when I use plain Ubuntu now.
