MySQL - using for free

  • Dear all,
I heard that MySQL is open source and it is free of charge. But that's only conditional. Does anyone know when can I use it for free??
I wish to use as back end of database applications.

    Thank you in advance.
    Alan

  • You have to use the Community Edition ...
    https://www.mysql.com/products/community/

I think this has what most people would need from a relational database.

  • There are a number of other decent free ones out there, including even Microsoft SQL Server Express, which also has most of what you would need, but no replication and limit in terms of how many processors it can use.

Thank you Ladislaus. MS SQL Server Express is the best choice for free DB server, I think.
MySQL community is free only if it is used for open source projects, I think.

  • Thank you Ladislaus. [....]  MySQL Community is free only if it is used for open source projects, I think.

I don't see any such restriction at the link that ‘Ladislaus’ provided.  Appending "I think" might seriously weaken many CathInfo members' confidence in any evaluation posted by a "Newbie"; it makes your conclusion seem overly flippant.  Would you please provide a link that confirms that MySQL imposes such a condition?

  • I heard that MySQL is open source and it is free of charge [....]  I wish to use as back end of database applications.

Do you realize that your inquiry is not much different from the classic "I want to photograph nature, and I heard that the Can-kon XYZ101 is on sale for $999; should I buy one?"

Such an inquiry omits nearly all the information that should inform selection & purchase of a camera: How do you plan to use it []?  How much of a load, quantified as number of exposures made, do you reasonably expect to put on it each month?  What's your level of skill & relevant experience?

Returning to your  computational inquiry, your level of training or skill, plus relevant experience matter quite a lot.  What level of technical support do you expect to need to keep your project on schedule, and to resolve later problems?  As a "back end of database applications", what query load do you need it to handle gracefully [#]?  Do you reasonably expect that a single server will suffice until after you retire from the project (or go to your final reward), or will you need to scale its thruput significantly upward, e.g., distribute processing over a network, incurring the complications of database-integrityOh!  I almost forgot: Who'll be paying for development & maintenance of your project?

    -------
Note : E.g., keeping the proposed camera at home in a comfy temperature-controlled room, shooting activity at an outdoor bird-feeder thro' a large window; or tromping thro' forests or swamps with a tripod, stalking wildlife that's active mostly in typically, um, sloppy weather?

Note #: Are there any occasions on which you should expect your database to get cruelly pounded, like the landline telephone system on Mothers' Day, or maybe Amazon on December 20--23?

  • Do you realize that your inquiry is ....

I have put 50+ page papers together that didn't have as many footnotes as your three paragraphs.

Further, it has been my experience that those who continuously write in a manner that goes against well and accepted writing conventions of the English language tend to be narcissists (i.e., suffer from the mortal sin of pride).

    Really now?  You again?

My sentences are syntactically valid English, are they not?

It should be no revelation to you after your 8 months of membership, that CathInfo is an Internet forum.  So it's descended from dial-up bulletin-board systems.  Neither technology is bound by any style guides.  We're free to indulge ourselves with any mixture of the meticulous styles of Computing Surveys and Nature, plus the informality of the Pulitzer Prize-winning columns of Herb Caen (San Francisco Chronicle).

As with your previous exercise in the childish game "I know something you don't know"[×], you failed to provide actionable information, notably failing to identify, for CathInfo readers,  any of the allegedly "well and accepted writing conventions" that you charge me with violating.

  • It should be no revelation to you after your 8 months of membership, that CathInfo is an Internet forum.

As well as it should be no revelation to you that, as you obviously have access to, and can somewhat use, the internet to access this forum, then you should also be able to access a variety of tools at your fingertips to translate a single word of which you were unfamiliar. See, e.g., Google translate, Babefish, etc.  Instead, just as you did here, you spend more time criticizing and denigrating.

    How telling.

  • I'm considering Sql server Express edition. And rejecting Mysql and PostgreSql because the former requires a fee for commercial use and the latter is more complicated.

  • I have never heard of this distinction. Why do you need to use such software.

What operating system do you use on your server. Why can't you just use linux?

  • Windows.
    My organization doesn't use Linux.

I picked Sql server because of it's reputation of reliability. As a developer, I am not experienced in db administration so I have to pick one which is reliable and not complicated.

  • Hi Alan,

Glad you got it sorted out. I used to be MSSQL admin long time ago and it was indeed very reliable. Probably still it is.

    Best,
    Andy

  • WRT MySQL, it can be used for a commercial backend no problem. This is a good write up:https://www.quora.com/Is-it-possible-to-use-a-free-MySQL-license-in-commercial-projects-that-run-on-a-website-you-charge-customers-to-use-your-app-online-which-in-turn-is-using-a-free-MySQL-version

It is not for a website, but for a database application.
Can my organisation use MySQL without paying any license fee ?
