  • Talk about Linux being rock solid --

My Linux (CentOS 6) web server hasn't been rebooted for 331 days! Can you imagine not rebooting for an entire year?

I remember some versions of Windows that needed to be rebooted several times a day...

There's a reason Linux dominates the web server market.

P.S. It's a shame, but I'm about to break my uptime streak on purpose.  I have to take down the server today (or some Sunday morning, when traffic is low) for A) dusting/cleaning and B) to be relocated to a different shelf.

  • CentOS is the gold standard for web servers for sure. I also really like Debian.

  • I had some early RedHat boxes (before they started charging for it) that I let go for years without rebooting.

  • I still prefer the old cathinfo layout, but no blackouts is nice.

  • Apparently there's a way to do even do Linux kernel upgrades without rebooting.

On this feast of one of the great doctors of the Church, I dare to offer my speculation [*] that it might be because crucial code in Linux, notably storage allocation & deallocation, plus buffer management, was designed, written, and tested by a responsible adult, with his successors loyally following his lead in programming maturity.

I confess that I have no sources to confirm my speculation; it's possible that many programmers faced a firing squad before Linux achieved the necessary level of quality & reliability.

Ummm, yes, a testament to the immature hacking [Δ] and related slipshod programming for which Bill Gates--and his Microsoft--seems to have become the standard-bearer.  And yes: Any perceived insult is fully intended.

Note *: From extensive experience, which was unpleasant as often as not, and not really amenable to being boiled down to comparisons of programming languages.

I like the current one better ... much cleaner and easier to look at.

I do have one pet peeve about its behavior.  When you type a few paragraphs, then hit Preview or post the reply, it automatically kills the white space between them ... until you go put them back in.  That's annoying behavior.  Some people have taken to putting a period between paragraphs in their posts to prevent this nuissance.

Windows NT was a disaster that way.  I had to reboot it ever night, while the Linux server I had next to it ran for years without a reboot.
