  • Probably soon to be bought out by some big tech to be abused, if it wasn't already secretly made by abusive Big Tech.

  • I think that you'd have to trust them to have done what they claim on the hardware side, but their hardware and their cell service is VERY expensive compared to various alternatives.

  • I’m just searching for alternative.  I was wondering about opinions from people here who are highly gifted in technology.

  • Both versions (the made-in-usa Liberty phone and made-in-china Librem 5) are ludicrously expensive/overpriced. The hardware is similar to what is found on $50 Android phones...but this phone costs either $800 or $2,000 (depending on whether you get the made-in-usa version or not).

It also runs Linux instead of Android. This is obviously a good thing privacy-wise, but Linux/Linux applications aren't designed for phones, and as of the time of this review it wasn't a very polished experience (e.g. the camera didn't work at all, no video playback, etc).

I'd just get a regular Android phone and turn off/not use any of the Google stuff (Chrome, Gmail, Assistant, etc).

I'm intrigued by the non-NIST ciphers since I'm convinced they put back doors in all the mainstream ones.

  • One possible answer is in fact to get a cheap non-smart phone since it'll have fewer tracking capabilities, but turning it off likely won't suffice for most phones, or even taking the battery out if it's even possible, since they have a little backup one.  Perhaps putting the phone in some Faraday bag would work.

    .

Aren't they open source, though? I tried to find a bit of information on this just now, but I can't imagine people would use encryption algorithms that aren't open source, for the reason you mentioned, that it could be compromised.

I have the impression that people who are experts in computer cryptography generally consider the standard encryption algorithms such as AES and dual-key encryption to be secure.

Sure, they're generally considered secure ... against your typical hackers or even organizations, but I'd be shocked if the government doesn't have back doors, keys, and/or super-computers dedicated to decrypting the stuff.  They're not going to let that kind of thing stand.  They'll sometimes claim they can't in legal cases (murders, etc.) ... but they're not going to let anyone know they have the capability, even to solve a murder or catch a serial killer.

Sanctity of life will be held in derision even by those who outwardly profess it, for in those days Our Lord Jesus Christ will send them not a true Pastor but a destroyer."  St. Francis of Assisi

I knowingly use NIST algorithms only when it is the sole option.

On occasion I have played with nesting a variety of non-NIST algorithms in layers. It works… and it is also a lot of work. :laugh1:
