  • Hi All,

I am looking to purchase a new laptop in the near future.  Any suggestions?

I currently have a 12 year old Gateway that is still working 🤞, but I'm not sure how much longer I've got!

    Thanks,
For there shall arise false Christs and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders, insomuch as to deceive (if possible) even the elect. (Matthew 24:24)

  • I assume you want to remain using Windows. I am not plugging Mac, even though I have been using it for 30+ years. Most whoop dedoo stuff that comes with either, apart from increased performance I hardly if ever use.As i look to The new Mac OS Ventura scheduled for release in October I don’t see anything all that exciting.

As DL says, it all depends what you use your computer for.:cowboy:

  • Whatever laptop it ends up being, make sure to check a notebookcheck.net review.

If a laptop or phone doesn't have a notebookcheck review I basically don't even consider it.

  • My laptop use is basic.  For the internet, email, spreadsheets, and docuмents.  Right now I have Word and Excel, and unless I can convert those files easily, I probably wouldn't want to change that. I really don't need anything too sophisticated although I suspect most laptops are sophisticated regardless.

  • I have an Acer Nitro 5, it works pretty well. Generally Acer and Asus have been good to me

Prior to me needing a computer for my job, I would just go to Walmart and get one off the shelf that didn't cost too much, that worked out well for me.

Then you really can't go wrong with any laptop. Just make sure it has no overheating issues or flickering on notebookcheck.net

I can't say what you should look for without knowing your budget but it sounds like you'll want something along the lines of:

    128 or 256 GB SSD
    Intel i5 8th gen or later / Ryzen 3 or 5
    8GB of RAM

The choice will then come down to looks, keyboard feel, touchpad feel, temperature under load, screen brightness, color accuracy, etc.

However, if you were perfectly satisfied with an old laptop you should just go out and buy a cheap laptop and don't worry about it.

If you're in that price range I can recommend the ASUS UX430, it's overkill for your use case though.

I like the Acer Swift line too.

I am looking in the $400-700 range.

  • I would suggest you investigate Lenovo’s Yoga 2 in 1. They are highly rated and, depending on the processor(I recommend an Intel I5), are reasonably priced depending on specs. I purchased a Surface Pro last week, and while it is excellent, it’s pretty pricey.

I suggest not going overboard and buying this laptop.

If you can, get one with a Ryzen processor, it will have better battery life and graphics.

I stopped following tech with Intel 11th gen but I think Ryzen is still better.

A Ryzen 3 or Intel i5 will be enough for you, a newer generation i3 might be as well but I'm not sure.

  • The American company system 76 makes open source based laptops. Friendly staff, and the laptop I got works well.

  • I just be wondering if there are any other outcasts in the computing sphere that use a 🖥 Mac?:jester:

I ended up trading my Airbook for credit which was applied to a new Airbook with the new M2 chip. As I muck about with audio and video I will see what this new puppy can do.
