My laptop use is basic.  For the internet, email, spreadsheets, and docuмents.  Right now I have Word and Excel, and unless I can convert those files easily, I probably wouldn't want to change that. I really don't need anything too sophisticated although I suspect most laptops are sophisticated regardless.

I have an Acer Nitro 5, it works pretty well. Generally Acer and Asus have been good to me

Prior to me needing a computer for my job, I would just go to Walmart and get one off the shelf that didn't cost too much, that worked out well for me.

Then you really can't go wrong with any laptop. Just make sure it has no overheating issues or flickering on notebookcheck.net

I can't say what you should look for without knowing your budget but it sounds like you'll want something along the lines of:

128 or 256 GB SSD
Intel i5 8th gen or later / Ryzen 3 or 5
8GB of RAM

The choice will then come down to looks, keyboard feel, touchpad feel, temperature under load, screen brightness, color accuracy, etc.

However, if you were perfectly satisfied with an old laptop you should just go out and buy a cheap laptop and don't worry about it.

If you're in that price range I can recommend the ASUS UX430, it's overkill for your use case though.

I like the Acer Swift line too.

I am looking in the $400-700 range.
