I noticed that around 2,300 members (all older than member #5436 -- when I switched to the current software?)
had NO gender set, so they were basically "neuter".
I set them all to Male as the best solution. But I'm certain that this is not accurate in ALL cases. I'm sure there were several women set to "male" in this mass gender assignment. So PLEASE CORRECT ME in this thread, OR send an e-mail to matthew at cathinfo dot com.
1. Men are not women. Men and women are fundamentally different: Women seem to enjoy/need a "safe space" away from the men more than vice versa. This has been observed on countless forums other than CathInfo. So having a few women in the Mens Only subforum wouldn't bother most men.
2. Reality of the Internet: women just aren't as numerous as men on discussion forums. So statistically, it's more likely for "male" to be correct, when I don't know the gender.
My best guess is that the old software had gender as an optional extra field, like your website URL, chat ID for Yahoo, ICQ, or AOL instant messenger. Plenty of people left it blank, and there was no penalty for doing so: there was no Mens/Womens subforum back then.
