Title: I'm learning about VMWare and virtualization, any tips to share?
Post by: JezusDeKoning on August 04, 2017, 11:47:48 PM
Writing this on a Windows XP VM with a Windows 10 base. Just figured out how to connect it to the internet, so that's a start. But eventually, I'd like to use Linux. Anyone have any suggestions or tips? God bless you all.

I have been working with VMWare for over 10 years. What do you want to know?

You'd like to use linux to do what? VMWare ESX is basically linux, but it is proprietary, as a hyper-visor layer that is. When you install something like VMWare Workstation on Windows, it is creating a virtual hypervisor as long as your processor supports virtualization (the vast majority do unless they're low end).

You can create a linux VM just as easy as a Windows VM in vmware. Same process for the most part. Just need the .iso really and provision the hardware. I've installed probably 12 different distributions of linux in VMWare VM's.

Network adapters inside VMs are virtual, so you set them up inside VMWare, vmxnet3 is what you want to use for windows machines, and install vmware tools on each instance.

I mean... vmware has a lot of products. VMware workstation is more for sandboxing and testing small stuff, not to be used long-term. ESX is the enterprise level hyper-visor that you install or run as an image off of a server.

If you want to PM me we can talk about it more.
