  • Had a break in last night. The burglar entered the garage and made of with some of my best gardening tools. Since I live in a pretty small neighborhood I usually keep all the gardening tools in the garage. We were all pretty shook up as we never really had any break-ins before.Right now I am looking for some good alarm systems. While doing a bit of research online I came across a blog that mentioned some of the benefits of getting both a wired and a wireless alarm system. I have heard that installation wise wireless can be pretty easy and has more options but I am not so sure about this. I am open to any suggestions. I don’t have any specific price range.I want to integrate it with my phone so that I can get notifications even while I am away.

  • A dog!  In our neighborhood, we had dogs.  The dogs died off, next we had cars b broken into, 2 stolen and probably made Mexico in a short time. We told the police, but the neighborhood is nice, quiet. Police said, and that is why.  Then neighbors got dogs again and the problem disappeared.

Our neighbor decided on an alarm system..I called it a "booby trap".  Cats with their movements, would set it off.  I would get phone calls from the alarm system org. and I would say, why are you calling me for?!

    A DOG!!!

  • Make sure you have a crucifix on your doors.. and pray a house consecration novena.. Praying for the protection of your house and household daily is important to do!

Sometimes burglars come back to places that they think are easy marks. Be aware. If you want the police to jail them later on and them to be prosecuted.. you'll very probably need to have a game cam/lowlight camera covering the spot they like to visit so there is actual evidence to use against them.

If the camera is concealed it's more likely to record a burglar and not be disabled by the burglar.

Kyrie eleison! My condolences on the burglary. I know it feels awful!

    FWIW.

I bought a security system a bit back. Sitting in a drawer, haven't installed it yet. I wasn't burgled recently so haven't felt too rushed. Put the security stickers I bought up already on the doors though. I got it for protection of persons rather than belongings.

It's advertised as 'wireless' they all tend to be these days, but accepts wired connections too. Since I don't like changing batteries all the time wired is the way to go for me, and I bought a separate pack of security wire and wired sensors for it.

Since I will just wire the first floor, at least at first, I can run all my wiring straight down through to the basement and that's all open so easy to wire. I have some fish tape to help as needed.

System came with the panel, a horn, some wireless remotes, resistors (helpful for the wired parts, read up on that if you DIY), wireless sensors and a motion detector, and some not so great but usable instructions for $55, and then I got the extra sensors and wire for I forget how much. Cheapest bargain basement type system.

Seems it's able to send SMS messages somehow I'm not too clear on it, don't have the instructions handy at the moment.. until I find them again it won't get installed that's for sure. Anyway, mentioning my bargain basement system is just to give an idea. Not saying I recommend going that route.

Seems like a bit of a pain in the neck project to DIY having to test out the alarm over and over again, and the connections, but that's the price of saving money by DIY -- time and effort. Sometimes it's worth it sometimes it isn't.

Pray all goes well for you!
    Sincerely,

    Shin

  • Well I bought a couple security signs and stickers that are really from a well known security company. Shh, no security system though, too expensive.

Also I have a piece of small paper on or next to every door and window that says "Jesus, Mary and Joseph, protect our home." That and St. Benedict medals buried at places in the shape of a cross at the edges of the property, I'm a single mother (widowed) and live in a remote area in the woods. The house has been blessed by priests twice. Our neighborhood is pretty spread out, each place has acres of land, surrounded by dense forest. We live in the middle of the forest with no street lights and it gets really dark at night. Both neighbors near me have either been robbed (forced entry) or vandalized (car broken into) in the five years I've lived here. And they have dogs (both have two and three large dogs each, but they bark at anything and in my opinion are pretty useless, they even run from me! ). I have a cowardly cat. I admit I would never tell a neighbor or someone I do not know well that I do not have a dog. Along with other prayers and confidence that the Holy Family will look out for me and my family (and double checking to see everything is locked at night), we, Thank God, are well and safe.

The only time I had any suspicions was a car that was parked at the foot of the property for several minutes. I learned out later that it was the Jehovah Witness! Apparently they were staring at the large Mary and St. Francis statures in the front of the yard and decided NOT to get out of the car and walk up the driveway, they just drove to the next house  :laugh1:

    Yes, like a Doberman Pincher
Would be much better than adding a "security" system to your house because they're tied to the cell phone network and probably act as trackers, like how "smart meters" can send digital signal processed (DSP) info to the power company, which contains information about when and for how long hair-driers of your other appliances were used, etc. All this can be inferred from analyzing from the mainline's electrical profile.

Of course there are some subscription-free security systems and encrypted wireless camera setups.

another option: Dummy security cameras. Yes, they exist. :)

But are stickers and signs really effective? Don't they simply attract thieves? "Hey, that house says it has valuable things! Let's go there!"

  • Getting a dog is an excellent piece of advice. Alarm systems are overrated. We have an alarm system, but next to the sound of a 12-gauge being racked, there's no deterrent like the menacing sound of a growling, barking dog. And when I say "dog," I don't mean a toy poodle. A German Shepherd or Doberman would do the trick.

If you insist on a security system, you might try SimpliSafe: http://simplisafe.com/home-2
"This principle is most certain: The non-Christian cannot in any way be Pope. The reason for this is that he cannot be head of what he is not a member. Now, he who is not a Christian is not a member of the Church, and a manifest heretic is not a Christian, as is clearly taught by St. Cyprian, St. Athanasius, St. Augustine, St. Jerome, and others. Therefore, the manifest heretic cannot be Pope." -- St. Robert Bellarmine

  • Garages can be easy to break into, per police.  I've been thinking of beefing up my house security recently, as part of the SHTF project.  If/when there's an economic collapse, there could be desperate people roaming neighborhoods and the police will be busy containing mobs.  Point is, NOW is the time to prepare!

I found some great ideas on youtube.  Lots of great videos on how to 'harden' your home.  Search for 'how to secure your front door' and there will be numerous other videos from there.  Basic principle is that criminals, like water, take the path of least resistance.  So, small measures can really do good.

    1.  Make sure your entry doors are strong.  Metal or fiberglass doors are very strong.  Avoid doors with windows in them...defeats the purpose of security.
    2. Beef up the door frame by using the 'door devil' or similar...Makes your door very hard to pry/kick open, even using police tactics.
    3.  Add iron/steel security doors, if you can.
    4.  Add a 'onGard' door brace.
    5.  Upgrade window locks.
    6.  Add wooden rods to sliding doors/windows.  You can even add this concept to normal, double-hung windows.
    7.  Add metal bars to basement windows.  (You can get fairly inexpensive metal bars which can be easily put on/taken off, to be used when out of town, or always.  Iron bars would be the best and most permanent, but if you're not in a high crime area, then anything which "looks" secure, will help to deter crime.
    8.  Add 3M plastic to windows (or a product called Lexan).  This prevents glass from shattering and will make it harder to break.
