Gmail Questions

  • Several months ago, I lost my Gmail login info.  I also lost access to the phone number and email address I used for backup retrieval.

Consequently, I have not logged out of my account for several months (knowing I would not be able to log back in by any means).

Tonight the charging port on my Dell decided it will no longer let the charging port work (yes, I changed charging cords twice, and even looked not changing the housing), so as my computer was old, I decided just to buy a new one.

    Questions:

    1) If I install my new computer in my own home (which will use the same IP Address??), will it force me to try and login to my Gmail account, or will the Gmail account be open already?

    2) If I would need to login (impossible), then I will he creating a new Gmail address tonight, and will need to notify all my contacts (and that’s a lot of contacts).  Presuming my old computer would accept one last charge, would I be able to export all of my email contacts/addresses to a spreadsheet or something, and mass import them into my new Gmail account?

Not 100% sure, but most likely no, as your new computer will be recognized as a new device, even if it shares the same IP address, so most likely will have to login.

Best practice in this situation is to first set up the new gmail account, and then forward all email from old account to new address.  As for exporting gmail contacts, see here.

All of that being said, there still may exist the possibility of retrieving/resetting your password.  See here.

  • I might have missed something but if you are logged in to gmail can you change your recovery address?  If you can do that, you are golden.  Change the recovery address to an email account you have access to (create a new account if you don’t already have another account).  Then you can login to gmail from your smart phone or some other device and at the login prompt request a new password be sent to your recovery address.

No, I can’t change it.  I type in the recovery phone number and email, and respond with the 6-digit codes Google sends, but inexplicably end up with a “Google cannot verify this account belongs to you.”
The think this is because these are 2nd or 3rd choice numbers/addresses, and it doesn’t like that (?).
Google wanted me to input the month and tear I opened the account.  Umm, yeah, keep that info right in my wallet?!?!

  • I just realized they require the password to change the recovery address.  That makes sense from a security point of view.  Can you export your data without a password?  If you could recover your recovery address that would work too.  Losing both the password and the recovery account is kind of an account death sentence.  Sooner or later you will get logged out.  So if you can’t get the recovery account back,  you should get your data out and move on to another account.

  • In case you aren’t aware, you can click on the Google Account tab at the top and navigate to Data where you can export/download all your account data including email in a format that can be imported into a new account.

  • Also since this data is most likely very important to you, it would be a good idea to read up about how best to do it. I have not done it personally but I’m sure this has happened to many many thousands of people and undoubtedly there are some good guides online for making the best of a tough situation.

  • Thank you Bonaventure and Clemens Maria.  If I can get my other computer to charge, I will try these tricks to get that info migrated to my new email account.

  • For the life of me, Google?
    1. Independent of any commercial entity, the US government is collecting all your data.  I’m fairly confident that even tor and other anonymizing services will not protect you.
    2. Google is convenient if you want to have a universal login to various apps.
    3. Google is slightly less intrusive than social media companies.
    4. Ideally you would use Google lightly and have your main email account with a company that pledges not to use your data for marketing purposes.  But you have to pay for that.
