Tethering an older phone?

  • Does anyone here know if it would be possible to tether an older phone? In the past I have desired switching to a flip phone or a phone that can't do nearly as much as a modern phone in order to avoid distractions. The only thing that stops me from doing this when I move out is my plans for wifi when I get a house. I had been planning on just getting an unlimited plan and tethering my phone for wifi but I am not sure if I could do that with an older phone.

  • There are dumb phone options that can only call, and maybe text. They have a black and white display, but I forget what they are called. There may be a next model up with navigation. Personally I'd get an old refurbished 2016 Samsung tablet for $80 for basic computer/internet stuff. I can't answer your tethering question, I don't know what that is.

  • Google an old-fashioned flip phone like “Jitterbug” or I think it’s now called “Lively.”  Also, you can get a real cheap TrakFone that you pay as you go.  There’s no internet, just calls, voicemail, and some have the old style text where you have to press the buttons multiple times depending upon which letter you want.  These do NOT access internet or WiFi.

What I'd ideally like would be something I could tether (get wifi from through an unlimited data plan) but with limited features. I wonder if an early phone with internet would fit the bill. Perhaps one of those phones would have a search engine but it would be so slow that I could barely use it. I want to use an unlimited data plan to save money on internet.

  • You might try dealing through one of these businesses. Unfortunately I know of no Catholic or Christian equivalents.  If there’s money to be made, I doubt religion will be an obstacle.  Maybe you or someone else can set up a Trad Catholic business?  There is certainly a need for it.

  • You'd probably get a better response posting this question on AndroidCentral. Those people know more about phones than people here.

  • Lightphone: Click Here

That is the phone I use. It has just the basics you need. You can also get directions and navigation on e-ink without distracting colors, without games or social media. I have music and can listen to some Catholic podcasts. I've used it for 2 to 3 years now and I the only thing I miss from the smartphone is the camera but sometimes I keep an actual camera in my car for times when I do need to take a picture or video of something.

    From their website:

The Light Phone II is a premium, minimal phone. It will never have social media, clickbait news, email, an internet browser, or any other anxiety-inducing infinite feed.

It's an experience we call going light.

It's a phone, it calls and texts. There is a customizable menu of simple tools, and a dashboard website to manage everything. There is a headphone jack, bluetooth, and it can be used as a personal hotspot.

Sounds like what I am looking for. I will look into it, thanks. I figure I could keep a phone without a sim card for taking photos and just keep it in the car.
