Thumbs up or thumbs down?

  • Does anyone else here dislike the down-thumb function on this forum?  I think that it gives haters and the emotional the easy opportunity to hurt other members reputation.  It is anonymous, and perpetrators get off scot-free.

  • I wouldn't object to doing away with both of the thumb choices.  I think they are both abused.

  • I like them, I am usually on when I am one-handed and holding a baby so they are very helpful when you just want to give a nod of approval or disapproval without necessarily having the means or inclination to comment.

    Keep it.

Dont worry too much at how many likes or dislikes you have, you can always look at it as people reading your posts.

    Keep it.

  • Holysouls - I will give you an A for effort :laugh1:. I like using the thumb-up, but when I weigh it all, I think that the down-thumb should go.  If I had to give up the thumb-up to get it, I would.  I think it would create more transparency.

Complaining about thumbs-down on this forum is bound to get you more of them!

Thumbs-down does not mean hate or emotiona It means somebody disagrees with what you say. Maybe they haven't got time to post. It's just a quick way to say "I disagree".

And it means somebody has read your post. Two thumbs down means that at least two people have read it. Take it with a pinch of salt!

How can it possibly hurt your reputation? Aren't you anonymous?

What do you imagine would be an adequate punishment for making a thumbs down? By the way thumbs-up is also anonymous!

  • I might suggest an indication of how many people are hiding a person's posts, and perhaps a threshold indicator of some sort where if greater than half of the forum is hiding a person's posts, that person would be blocked from posting.

  • Nadir -  There is a big difference between the thumbs.  If one agrees with a post, nothing more needs to be said.  But, if one disagrees, they should explain why.  I wouldn't care as much about this if the results were not front and center on my(and others) profile.  It is like a tattoo.  You are forced to wear around other peoples opinion of you(so to speak), and you do not know who those other people are.

  • Johnanthony - that is an interesting concept.  I don't have a problem with that.  I don't think that the majority of people here are notorious or quick to down-thumb.  Your idea would show that(if I am right).

  • Who cares?
If anyone says that true and natural water is not necessary for baptism and thus twists into some metaphor the words of our Lord Jesus Christ" Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit" (Jn 3:5) let him be anathema.

  • Maybe you can offer up your thumbs-down for Lent - in silence!

  • My dislike of the thumbs is based on the impossibility, in many cases, to tell what they mean, since many posts make more than one point.
What return shall I make to the Lord for all the things that He hath given unto me?
