  • I have been wondering this. For my first car I plan on getting something that looks nice like a Mitsubishi or a Subaru. What are the pros and cons?

  • Like which Subaru or Mitsubishi, specifically?
    .
By the way, does Mitsubishi still exist? I don't think I've seen any new cars with a Mitsubishi logo on the road recently. But then again I don't pay much attention to new cars.

  • From what I've heard, the quality of Mitsubishis aren't the greatest anymore, but, really, virtually none of the major car manufacturers can boast outstanding quality outside of maybe Toyota and Honda these days. And even they have their problems.

I would lean more towards Subaru than Mitsubishi. But I'm no expert in either.

Edit: and to clarify, by "quality" I mean longevity and maintenance costs. Not the interior materials or look of the vehicle. Most GM cars and trucks look great, but they are rolling piles of junk when it comes to longevity and maintenance costs.
"Be not therefore solicitous for tomorrow; for the morrow will be solicitous for itself. Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof." [Matt. 6:34]

I like how they look but I don't think I could get an 80s or 90s car since they are significantly less safe.

  • I would look into a Honda. Safe and reliable.

  • What others have said. Get yourself a Honda or Toyota from the first decade of the current century. Old enough to have lost almost all of its value and be a fantastic bargain, new enough to be safe and have a lot of great features such as variable valve timing, anti-lock brakes, airbags, traction control, automatic climate control, etc. Old enough not to have the annoying seat-belt nag alarm (I FREAKING HATE THAT), the automatic door locks, or other government-mandated miseries. New enough so that the metallurgy in the engine is so fantastically amazing that you can reasonably expect that car to last three or four hundred thousand miles, and definitely isn't even halfway through its expected life cycle despite being 10-20 years old. Just change the oil regularly and keep up on the other fluids, and you'll have a car that was made around the time you were born and with routine maintenance will be around long after you're gone (assuming a long and prosperous life for you, of course).
    .
That is definitely the sweet spot, the Golden Age of automotive technology.
    .
Did I mention I am a fan of early 21st-century Hondas and Toyotas? :laugh1:

I was going to go in search of that used Toyota Camry I've been talking about here in the forum, but I was needed by my family today.  No rush.  I'm already clearing out the garage to make room for it.  Maybe later in the week.  They say it's hard to go wrong with a Camry.

  • My Mitsubishi was terrible, particularly the transmission, which all but died on me.  It was a miracle that the next used car place I went to, where I brought the Mitsubishi as a trade-in, gave me something like $3000 in trade-in credit.  I hid nothing, although they didn't specifically ask about the condition of the car.  It happened to have new body work because somebody had smashed the side during a hit-and-run when I was inside, on the freeway.  (2nd miracle; it was a wonder I didn't end up in the hospital; I was utterly untouched and uninjured.)

Just because they liked the look of it (I think), they accepted it.  I asked them if they were planning to resell it; no, they said; they would only auction it off for parts.  Clearly they were going to take a loss on it, and it was my down payment on a slightly used Hyundai Elantra GT -- my fake "sports car" that has both manual and automatic transmission.  (I know how to drive both, of course.)

There are no secrets these days, I think, at least from our State Department of Motor Vehicles.  Every time a car is worked on, including by an independent mechanic, the diagnosis and repair has to be recorded.

I love my little Hyundai; hated the Mitsubishi from the very beginning, but at the time I bought the latter, my credit was lousy and it was all I could afford.  I spent years rebuilding my credit, which allowed me to buy the next car because my credit score was something like 770 this most recent time.

I worked 20+ years in the automobile manufacturing business, Mitsubishis are junk. Stick with Toyota and Honda.

Heh....so is that guy Jєωιѕн or Italian?   :laugh1:

Seriously though....I have a 2015 Honda Civic.  Although typically a fan of Toyota as well, I did not care for the 2015 Corolla when I was looking specifically at only the Honda, Toyota and Subaru.

  • The only reason I gave up my Honda Accord was that I almost literally drove it into the ground.  I sold it to an auto mechanic who wanted to tinker with it, and as with my Mitsubishi, I withheld nothing about its condition.  It had 269K miles on it, and I loved that V-6 engine, but now Hondas are too rich for my blood.

It finally gave up on the mechanic as well.

Some sweeping generalizations. Honda CR-V GDI was a disaster and I believe Toyota had some major issues too. The claim about Subaru H6 engines being unreliable is taken from nowhere while a widespread issue with 2.5 H4 headgasket leak not even mentioned.

The best approach is to research a specific model/year if buying used.

They sure as heck don't make Accord's like they used to. My first car was a '93 Accord LX and I drove that thing for about 5-6 years. When I finally gave up on it (the frame was rusting out), it had 325k miles on it, zero engine problems. And I was a kid, so I did not take care of the car and would neglect oil changes, so that's a testament to those engines.

The 3.5L V6 that's in pretty much every Honda from the Ridgeline to the Accord around 2010 is pretty good. I have a 2010 Pilot and it runs really well with 185k, especially once you shut off the VCM with a work-around dongle. That said, I think it needs new cams, it's been pretty noisy lately. The only real widespread problems they seem to have are with the piston rings going bad and they need valve adjustments every 150k or so. I can't speak for anything recent though. But, given all of the electronics and emissions garbage they have to put in these cars for fuel economy, I'm sure they won't last as long (I'm looking at you Earth Dreams)
