Some TV networks you might like

  • For reasons of family sensibilities, I am forced to subscribe to a pay-TV service.  I realize that some traditional Catholics do not watch television (I don't know of anyone who eschews online video), and I get that, this is for those who do.

After my father's passing, I have been exploring all ways to save money in our household, in that I am now "business manager and CFO" of the family.  In my search for the cheapest "skinny bundle" that would be user-friendly, and which would give us a substantial selection of basic channels, I decided upon AT&Ttv.  $79.99/month provides service to both homes.

One network that has previously eluded me was One America News (OAN).  As you may know, they are billed as a conservative alternative to CNN, and they don't hate Donald Trump.  Getting OAN is a hat-trick, major cable providers (ours is Spectrum) don't carry it, and a dedicated service, to get both OAN and a handful of niche networks (KlowdTV), many of them networks no one has ever heard of before, is $9.99/month.  OAN is a high-quality channel, I'm watching it right now.

There are also two "subchannel diginets" that might appeal to conservative, traditional men, "nuts and bolts" types, "men's men".  One is Quest, that shows mainly docuмentaries, history, science, and adventure programming, some of it along the lines of "how this is made" and so on.  Much of the programming is Canadian-produced.  The other is Defy TV, which shows mostly reality-based programming along the lines of adventure shows as well as Duck Dynasty and shows featuring R. Lee Ermey (Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Full Metal Jacket).  And, yes, I know, "Gunny" made comments about Our Lord's enthusiasm for the Marine Corps (his exact word cannot be repeated here) and about Our Lady, but if you can look past that, anything he was in, is well worth watching.  Some of the reality-adventure shows have women whose "Daisy Duke"-like attire can't be reconciled with traditional Catholic modesty, but when women are doing things like dirt biking, ATVs, and braving the swamp, that's just how many of them dress.  It takes a lot along those lines to perturb a 60-year-old man who was with his wife for 14 years, and I know that many teenage boys are titillated at the sight of a fire hydrant or an oak tree (I exaggerate here only slightly, but having once been a teenage boy, I know what it is to "have problems" with purity with little provocation), so I wouldn't know what advice to give there.  (Maybe pray, hit the books, and get outside and actually do something manly?)

The diginets tend not to be on cable --- providers don't have to carry subchannels unless they just want to, or unless the main station makes their carriage a condition of being able to carry the main station (top-rated major network affiliates can do this, as nobody wants to subscribe to cable, and not be able to get major networks) --- so reception over-the-air is often the only choice.  Quest is on Tegna-owned stations, while Defy TV has replaced a home shopping channel on ION network stations.

Anyway, happy viewing, if that's your choice.

Not to second-guess your judgment, but providing free streams of services that are intended to be paid for, how can this be legal, and more importantly, isn't there a Seventh Commandment problem here?

I note that usnewson.com has a disclaimer, that they are simply providing third-party streams of services that are made available free online in the first place, so that's probably okay (at least from a moral standpoint, i.e., you are just getting what you'd be getting, if you went to that network's website), but as far as ustv247.tv, that seems a little dodgy.  The network feeds seem to be from NYC in the case of ABC, and Miami in the case of PBS.  Can't tell right now about CBS, and NBC requires a VPN.

I used to watch ustvnow.com, which provided feeds of some major networks for free, but they then moved to a paid-subscription model, with only a few channels available free, none of them major networks.  Their major-network feeds were from affiliates in Pennsylvania.  The service was intended for military and US residents overseas, but nowhere in the service agreement, did it require you to state that you were in either category.  It came in handy, if I wanted to watch the evening propaganda news from ABC or CBS, or to pick it up when I wasn't near a TV set.  AT&Ttv's mobile option provides this for me now.

And as far as network news is concerned, I think everyone here is aware of the problems with it, but I'm telling you, it has morphed into something eerily similar to communist propaganda in the USSR or Poland.  Same news, same point of view, same message, on all channels.  The PBS Newshour is slightly more impartial, but not by much.  NPR always sounds to me vaguely like I'm listening to Radio Havana Cuba with perfect American-tinged English, not to mention that thing they do, that removes all hesitations, "ummm"s, and so on --- sounds kind of robotic, and this must be said, a little sinister.  And the "vocal fry" in the women's voices on NPR, well, now that it's been called to my attention, I find it extremely irritating.

  • I don't know about ustv247 anymore, it started not working well for me before I switched to USNEWSON.  Their legal disclaimer claims it is legal, that's all I know.  I figured it's been around long enough for OAN to issue a cease and desist if they were doing something wrong.  It is offered on my ROKU for free, but I don't like watching it through ROKU since I don't have a router with a VPN on it and don't want them monitering my political habits, so I watch it USNEWSON.
    please pray for me

I would say that OAN has bigger problems right now, bigger fish to fry, and if the truth were known, they probably don't mind some viewers here and there, getting their feed without paying for it.  OAN doesn't provide their main feed via Roku, just OAN Plus, which has some OAN programming but not in-pattern (i.e., not the "live" OAN feed).

I think of OAN as basically "Newsmax with the kid gloves off".  Similar viewpoint, OAN is just a little more "in your face" about it.  Good channel.  I'm watching the Trump speech live right now.  Ohhhh... he's just made that "baseless" claim about Georgia again...  Cullman, Alabama, home of Abbot Leonard Giardina's Christ the King Abbey, I visited twice when Abbot Leonard was living.

If they won't mention the 6 Gorzillion lb little-hat gorilla in the room, then any such source is, as you say, "kids gloves."

Are you referring to some statistic with a very large multiple of 6, that has been, shall we say, a matter of some dispute in sources that challenge the conventional wisdom?  Inquiry more appropriate to a man called Jake Ewing?  (Say that out loud a couple of times, and it'll make sense.)

    Qui legit, intelligat.

That is my preference, that and free Roku programming, but circuмstances dictate that I have some sort of television connection beyond that, coming into the house.  I like saving money.  But my preferences are not the only preferences that must be considered.

Not that any of us have "gone there" yet in this thread, but just to clarify, I do not wish to rehash the old SSPX debate about not even having a television in the house, nor anything about television being X number of steps removed from reality.  I actually agree with much of this reasoning, but television, online video, social media video, and so on, have "morphed" together, in that it is rapidly becoming, if it hasn't already, a single phenomenon, i.e., a multi-platform means of delivering two-dimensional video to mass audiences.  Using that reasoning, there could be no cinema, no movies, because they, too, are "X number of steps removed from reality".  So are photographs.  So are books.

  • Quote
I condemn all indecent and immoral motion pictures, and those which glorify crime or criminals. I promise to do all that I can to strengthen public opinion against the production of indecent and immoral films, and to unite with all who protest against them. I acknowledge my obligation to form a right conscience about pictures that are dangerous to my moral life. I pledge myself to remain away from them. I promise, further, to stay away altogether from places of amusement which show them as a matter of policy.

I'm lost here.  What is the point?

Keep in mind, too, that this is a secular article.  To my knowledge, there is no magisterially binding discipline within the Catholic Church that forbids, under pain of sin, the viewing of any particular film.  IOW, there isn't an equivalent of the Index Librorum Prohibitorum for films.  The natural moral law would govern, but unless I am missing something, there is no "list of forbidden films".  The Legion of Decency was merely a cooperative effort of clergy and laity.  Good advice, but not binding under pain of sin.

The first ten minutes of Carrie (the "locker-room scene") are a danger to any young boy struggling with purity, but aside from that, the film is strong, yes, deals with the occult, yes, but is not morally offensive on any level.  And I'm here to tell you, in the rudderless, often-extremist world of the "conservative Novus Ordo", there are women almost as over-the-top as Carrie's mother.  One in particular comes to mind (not a good story), and I have to think many of us have been buttonholed by "little holy women" who insist, it's not negotiable, that Our Lady IS appearing at this place or that one, and you'd better believe it!  In that fever swamp of "I'm going to write a letter to the bishop about that", you get some real doozies, some real pieces of work.  In fact, that is one thing that appeals to me about the traditionalist environment --- you have a "firebreak" of sorts against the worst excesses.  There are isolated exceptions.

  • Just in case anyone's interested, I called and cancelled the AT&Ttv (which is now DirecTV Stream).  My family didn't like it, too many changes to what they're used to, and we're keeping Spectrum.  I can't afford two systems, and I can get much OAN content for free via Roku on OAN Plus.

Good enough.  I'm probably backing into watching too much TV as it is.  The SSPX warns against relying upon television for some very good reasons.
