After stealth fighters and bombers made development of new cutting-edge aircraft prohibitively expensive, aerospace engineers have been focused on the development of the next phase of flight, which will render the need for "wings" irrelevant.
.
This is not breaking news.
.
Right when SpaceX and competition are slinging it out with BFRs and the like, the looming prospect of not needing rockets at all arises.
.
Aviation history is full of this kind of thing. When WWII was looming over the horizon in 1938, the good old USA was stuck entirely in the "traditional" biplane technology of WWI, while Japan already had the Zero and Germany already had the ME109. American aviators hardly recognized the problem but fortunately for us, some Army and Air Force generals did, which is when they started to develop the Hellcat and P-38. BTW the same engineer, Kelly Johnson, who together with Tony Le Viere designed the showstopping P-38 would later design the most amazing record-breaker of all jet aircraft in history, the legendary SR-71, which BTW bears an uncanny resemblance to the P-38.

If it were not for our P-38s we would have lost the war in the Pacific.
They continued to use the American Allison engine, when the new P-51 Mustangs were upgraded with Rolls Royce Merlin engines before the end of the war, which was a key factor in the victory over nαzι Germany.
.
These things are not insignificant. You would have had at best the choice of Japanese or German for language, you know.
Fast food, take your pick: Sushi or Sauerkraut?
