E readers are nice, but it is completely dependent on technology.  All that will be lost if anything ever happens to the Internet or the power grid.

My kindle keeps a charge for like four weeks.

Get one of these, for after four weeks are up...

    Perfect, thank you.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • Anytime I've been without power, I didn't have much time for reading. Lots of work to be done.  :cowboy:

  • Is there a St Andrew Missal for the Kindle? I looked on Amazon but didn't see one.

If you can find it in digital format, you might be able to get it onto Kindle but it is tricky.

  • 4. I'd grab the small, open box of rare prayer books, some of them are specifically for women, printed in the late 1800s/early 1900s, in there is also a mint copy of The Catholic Girls Guide, plus one that belonged to my mother. Most books I got for a quarter at a novus ordo rummage sale.

  • Lots of people are saying Haydock Bible, I'd have to agree, that would be my #5.

    They are expensive to replace.

    1. Missal

    2. Blessed Be God (a prayerbook that includes the Mass, a section on the Holy Rosary, chapters on contrition, avoiding sin, etc and some wonderful excerpts from the Angelic Doctor.

    3. Franciscan Tertiaries' Manual (The Tertiaries' Companion) ca. 1914. Gorgeous art, all sorts of indulgenced prayers and it's Franciscan and it fits in a pants pocket with room to spare.

    4. Leather-bound set of Butler's Lives of the Saints. Found it at a library in a pile of books that was being thrown away. They were practically like new, in their storage box, and are indispensable as teaching tools for my children, who had previously only had fictional Prot storybooks as a source for their 'heroes'.

    5. I have to say a King James Bible for two reasons: One, I don't own a D-R yet, as anything not paperback is expensive and I would wear out a paperback in weeks, and two, while I don't have a D-R, even if I did, trying to share the Faith with an evangelical out of a Catholic Bible can be an impediment, esp if it's an impromptu discussion. My pocket-sized KJV is very handy. If I ever found a comparably-sized D-R, I'd buy 20 of them.

Immaculate Heart of Mary, triumph soon!

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.
This evil of heresy spreads itself. The doctrines of godliness are overturned; the rules of the Church are in confusion; the ambition of the unprincipled seizes upon places of authority; and the chief seat [the Papacy] is now openly proposed as a rewar

  • I really like Blessed Be God. I'm so tempted to order ten more and keep them all around the house and in the car as an aid in praying more.

Major catastrophe strikes...You can only save five Catholic books from your personal library, what would you save and why?

    Wow, um...

Do they have to be five physically distinct books, or five different sets of books?

If it is the former, it would be something that I do not wish to think about: an agony I would not wish for even the most hateful communist.

If it is the latter, then...

    1. Rev. Fr. Cornelius à Lapide's Great Commentary (Gospels, Epistles of St. Paul, Acts, Apocalypse, Canticle of Canticles)

    2. The Missale Romanum

    3. The Breviarium Monasticuм

    4. The sacred Vulgate

    5. The Summa

...um, I think I would perish in the catastrophe before I can carry all those books. I would die as I lived: amongst books!

     :reading:
Please ignore all that I have written regarding sedevacantism.

I didn't know about Lapide's commentaries besides the Gospels! Perfect for Christmas gifts. In this house, anyways.

  • 1.  The Church's Year by Father Goffine.  I don't know how we lived without it and when the time comes that we don't have the Mass anymore, it will be indispensable!

    2. DR Bible

    3. Father Lasance Missal

    4. Imitation of Christ

    5.  Lives of the Saints
